River North, Gold Coast may be a bit too expensive. Lincoln Park is a little less. Wicker Park/Bucktown a little less so. There is Lakeview (Wrigleyville) and South Loop as well. These areas all have young people and are generally lacking in vicious crimes. It all depends on what you want in a neighborhood. A commute to the suburbs is going to suck either way.
