Greetings all my employer relocated me from Philly to California just a few months ago and now it looks like I'll be moving to the Chicago area. My companies office is actually outside the city but I'm thinking I might live in the city and commute out. Any suggestions for places I can live? Not looking for top of the line neighborhoods but don't want to be caught in gang crossfire either. Something reasonably priced and reasonably safe(i.e. lowerish violent crime rates)

Avoid Hyde Park.

I've got friends in River North and Lincoln Park, they're both great neighborhoods and I don't think their rent is too outrageous. You may also want to look at some of the neighborhoods on the west side, like Ukrainian Village or Wicker Park.

River North, Gold Coast may be a bit too expensive. Lincoln Park is a little less. Wicker Park/Bucktown a little less so. There is Lakeview (Wrigleyville) and South Loop as well. These areas all have young people and are generally lacking in vicious crimes. It all depends on what you want in a neighborhood. A commute to the suburbs is going to suck either way.
