(A) Mr. Smith crosses the river first.
is possible without leaving john alone
(B) Mr. Smith crosses the river last.
same as A
(C) Mr. and Mrs. Smith do not cross together.
true or john will be left alone
(D) John crosses the river first.
now this is incorrect as john will be alone on the river bank .violates the condition of not leaving john alone
(E) John crosses the river second.
possible
so only D is the condition in which passage fails
IMO D

Option D - If John crossed the river first he would be alone on the other side.
Option E - If John crossed the river second, it means he was alone when Mrs. Smith was crossing.

Both seem similar. What am I missing?

Jay
When john is traveling in 2nd position, He is never alone. Because there are three persons, Only one has(either mr. or Mrs smith) crossed the river and one person is still behind john. In boat also he is with jonas.

Hope it will clear your confusion
