My ultimate goal is to get a Ph.D. in marketing. I do not possess a BS in Marketing, so I am considering getting a master's degree as a stepping point for Ph.D. However, for personal reasons, I don't want to go to a school outside of the state I reside, and most of the schools in the state offer MBA or one-year MS programs, which do not require a thesis for completion. Nonetheless, going to MS in marketing will be a plus if I apply to a Ph.D. program later? What do you think...?

I would advise you to go for research masters. If a research master is not possible then go for MS marketing research (something like this: Click here). If this is also not possible then go for MS - MArketing (If you have recently done your undergrad), however, try to do at least one marketing seminar course and do help a professor in his research. This will help you get letters of recommendation from the right persons. If you are pretty clear that your ultimate goal is to do a Ph.D. then don't do an MBA. Also, don't delay your Ph.D. admissions except for the time you are spending your profile to get a good Ph.D. admission.

All the best!
