Hello,
I am seeking advice in regards to my chances of being accepted into an MSRED program. Below are my stats in terms of academics and work experience.
Background:
I am currently 26 years old, general contracting and development is in my blood. I am looking to attend a top program within the mid-Atlantic region, but I am willing to relocate if an opportunity presents itself. My top choices currently are Johns Hopkins and Georgetown.
Academics:
My college career started out rough which explains why I am just now graduating with my undergrad. After my completion of high school, I attended the University of Tampa for a semester roughly 2 months in I was involved in a serious car accident. This damaged my GPA (around a 2.0) and resulted in me returning home. Upon my arrival home I attended the local community college part-time because I was still recovering with physical therapy and dealing with the aftermath of the concussion. Approximately one year later another car accident and again it affected my GPA due to the recovery and missing classes. Then again about 6 months later another one, all of which were not my fault by the way (I know I had the worst luck ever). Between being heavily medicated and recovering from injuries school seemed almost impossible and I took time off. On top of that, I was mourning the loss of my best friend who passed away around the time this was all happening (the worst times of my life). To sum it up a couple of different community colleges later I had obtained around 50 credits with a GPA of 2.8. Obviously, in my application, I will acknowledge this story and go into detail about how it affected my GPA. Well after taking time off I returned to finish what I had started. This time attending a public college somewhat competitive (around 50% acceptance rate). My major was business admin with a concentration in Project Management and Business Analysis. I completed the remainder of my credits with a 3.6 GPA.
Work Experience:
Since I was a kid I always worked in construction during the summer. During my time off from school, I worked as an estimator for a small home builder (under 50 houses a year) for about 3 years. Upon my return back to school, I pursued an internship with a large general contractor and developer (around a billion in revenue a year). Now I have excepted a job as a project engineer with the same GC and developer.
GMAT:
Currently, I am studying for the GMAT I took it blindly without studying at all and received a 500. I'm aiming to score in the mid 600s.
Recommendations:
I plan to get some solid recommendations from work and I do have a lot of professors willing to vouch for me.
Goal:
After speaking with the HR manager at my firm she told me if I wanted to switch from construction to development I need a masters degree. So my goal is to eventually be a VP in development, I feel that having construction work experience and business education I will prosper.
Questions:
Do I have a shot at getting accepted into either program?
Is there anything I should do to add to my application?
Do you think my story justifies my poor performance earlier in my college career?
Thank you in advance!
