Hi there! First CAT didn't go well (450 Q31 V20), although I did it after a long day and my concentration wasn't great, rushing and guessing many questions on and off. I'm not too disheartened at this point in time, as I know that I can perform better well rested and, of course, with more practice.

yes the deadline is may 28, although I have inquired as to the period of time, if any, after the deadline in which I can take the gmat, in which case I may be able to take the test with an extra week or so with preparation under my belt (fingers crossed).
I haven't received a response about the average GMAT score of entrants accepted into the program I am considering, however their popular MBA program yields a 680 average, which is a concern assuming this holds true for the program I am applying for. If my next cat doesn't improve sufficiently I may delay my application a semester and take the GMAT later in the year, although I'm still keen to have a crack even if I won't be able to get a decent score.

I like the advice for taking a CAT away from home under test like conditions. While I did try to do that at home, I almost felt too... comfortable, and again the tiredness did not help this.

I think I will be turning it down a gear or two for a bit to review the fundamentals (might even start from scratch with Manhattan foundations of verbal/math).

Hi andydt,

You seem to be approaching all of this in a rational way, which is good. Since the GMAT score is such a big part of the application process, making sure that you have a competitive score is essential (and earning that score sometimes takes longer than people want it to).

Based on your initial post, it sounded like you were planning to take the CAT in the morning, but you ended up taking it after a long day at work. THAT shift could very well have impacted your performance. Most Test Takers tend to do better earlier in the day, so you should factor that into your studies.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

^ although I didn't explicitly mention it, It was my inital intention to take the cat in the morning! 9am (which is when I will be likely taking my test at the test center).
(edit: whoops I did mention that lol but yes I will consider definitely taking cats in the morning from now on).

Got the word back from the school.
"Our selection panel generally prefers GMAT scores of 600 or more. A competitive GMAT result is >645/ 800. As a guide, a comparable GRE result would be one where the verbal and quantitative scores add to 312 or more (post August 2011 grading system)."
Hmmm... I'll see what I can score on the next cat. Although I think 600+ is doable, I have to make up some ground for my not-so great gpa, so really a 650+ would be ideal...

currently having a rest from gmat stuff as I am busy with other things (still looking at flash cards whenever I can in the mean time). I will be delving deep into the Mgmat guides, and will be practicing active reading at least once a day (e.g. reading the financial review (australian newspaper), the economist, etc.).
