I am a final year undergraduate Electronic Engineering student at a prominent university in the UK with a GMAT of 720, AWA 5.0 . I've consistently been in the top 2% of my class and was a research intern at Siemens Corporate Research in the US this summer. I have a pretty good/varied extra curricular record- (National junior champion in a particular sport in a particular country, Captain/Member of three sports teams at school/university for several years, Chief Editor of the hall magazine and a stint on the student council as secretary). If it counts, I'm 21 and have spent my life in seven countries ( three years each !!) and am well versed in five languages. I'm keen on doing an MBA but would the lack of any work experience spell doom for my application or can I still be hopeful of an admit ? I'm planning on applying to a few MBA programs in the US, including the likes of Harvard and Stanford etc.
Would I present a strong application or should I work for a few years first ?

Sorry, I had been thinking about your message but have not responded yet.

You have an impressive set of admissions factors and are a viable candidate for some of the ultra elite cluster programs. However, why do you wish to enter an MBA program immediately?

If you wait a few years you will have more experiences to draw from and will have a viable chance at all of the ultra elites.

Hi Hjort,
I think a few years of work experience at this stage would make good sense too. I have been offered a job at Analog Devices UK as a Graduate Design Engineer. My question is, is work experience of any kind alright for an MBA or does it have to be in any way management related ? In my case, as a design engineer working in the Computer Aided Design department, I would primarily be on my own and there wouldnt be much of teamwork or responsibility as such, at least for the first year or two, where I'd undergo lots of training. So would these few years of training/work experience be looked upon at par with other applicants in the MBA program (e.g. business analysts in management consultancies) who may have had more opportunities to show teamwork and leadership potential ?
