As for location, I'm not choosing California because I'm afraid of not returning to the state. I'm choosing California because I do not want to live anywhere else in the US other than here or NYC. No offense to any other schools or locations out there, but weather and metro area are two things that matter to me, and I would rather reapply again the year after than to go live in a place I don't want to live for 2 years just to get an MBA. I hope you understand. =)

All Ultra-Elites and most of the Elites will have reasonably sized alumni basis everywhere. Going to Chicago, for eg., won't mean that you'll be recruited by Mid West firms only.

The regional factor becomes important for schools in the Trans Elite cluster and below and somehow important for some of the Elites.

Eg1: USC vs. Emory --> go to USC if you want to work in Cal, to Emory if you want to work in the South.

Eg2: Kellogg vs. MIT --> go to the one that accepts you regarless of intended post graduation location. If both accept you, choose based on fit/feel or any other data.

Thanks lepium, I understand what you're saying. Since I'm only applying to Ultra-Elite and Elites, I'm not really worried about where I will be able to work. As I mentioned, I am only applying to schools where I want to live *during* the 2 years I'm in school. I don't want to move from California in the near future at all, and if I do, the place needs to have something that really entices me, like NYC.

Also, most of the other top schools aren't really focused on tech, entrepreneurship, global management, and innovation as Stanford/Cal are. I've been reading around and having really found a good fit for what I want to do other than those two schools. Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Just wanted to update. I'm pretty sure I'll also apply to UCLA and Stern after looking at those two schools. Here's probably how I'll work my application order:

Round 1:
UCLA
Cal (if there's significant overlap in essay questions)
Stanford (I should be well practiced by then to do my best work)
Stern (if I'm not burned out)

Round 2:
Stern (if I'm burned out in Rd1)
