I have seen similar posts, but I would still want some guidance.
I gave my GMAT online exam on 27th October and got a 660 (Q48, V34, IR 5). Although I knew while giving the exam, that I have messed up the verbal section I was not expecting the score to be that low. The quant score was 1 less than what I had been averaging on my mocks. The test experience was smooth although I had text anxiety before the exam began but I settled in after the authorisation process. I felt ready and excited to begin the exam.
The interesting part is my mock scores (in that order)
Gmat Whiz Free Mock - 690 (Q50, V34)
Official Mock 1 - 720 (Q49, V39) - 1st retake after being fully prepared (scored 530 a while back when gave it for the first time)
Official Mock 2 - 710 (Q49, V38)
Princeton Mock - 680 (Q51, V33)
Official Mock 3 - 710 (Q49, V38)
Official Mock 4 - 670 (Q49, V32)
Official Mock 5 - 720 (Q49, V38)
Expert's Global - 690 (Q49, V38)
Official Mock 6 - 750 (Q49, V42) - The verbal section was one of the easiest on this one. I got only 5 wrong.
While my quant score is almost similar to what I had been getting in mocks, the verbal score is a bit off from the average(~37). I was expecting somewhere between 680-700 owing to the bad performance on the verbal section but seeing 660 pop up was disheartening and I feel defeated with no idea what to do next. My target score is 740. I am targetting HEC Paris, INSEAD, Oxford and Cambridge and anything below 720 will seriously hurt my chances of getting accepted because of my general profile (Indian-civil engineer-2.2 yrs experience - gap years). I am looking to apply for the Sep 23 intake.
My prep included an
e-GMAT course, which helped set up a strong foundation in quant and a good grasp on the basics & rules of the verbal portion. I watched all related Gmat Ninja videos on YouTube as well. For the past 2-3 months, I had been practising 600-700 & 700 level OG & review questions on the
Forum Quiz and have exhausted almost all quant questions from both OGs and Reviews(pre-2000 and post-2000). I have made a detailed and organised
error log that I reviewed thoroughly before appearing for the exam.
Since it was an online attempt I cannot get an ESR but I think I know where I went wrong:
VERBAL
- Time Management - I had been practising on
Forum Quiz by doing 10 SC, 10 CR and 3 RC (5 questions each) on each attempt and trying to finish within 64 minutes, thinking, if I can do 40 in 64, I can easily manage 36 in 65. I completed an average of 38 questions in 64 minutes. The story on the exam, however, was a little different. I encountered 4 RCs (3 with 3 questions and 1 with 4), I had to spend a few extra seconds on SC questions because the language was tougher than what I had been practising.
- Language/Vocabulary - I don't know if it is just me but the language, wording and vocabulary of official SC questions are way tougher than what I have seen on OGs and official mocks. I usually had 50:50 splits in mocks and OG questions but I was stuck between 3 on the exam, hence I took additional time. I was not expecting the verbal section to be that tough.
QUANT
- The quant section was also tougher than the OG and mock questions. Only a few questions were straightforward.
- I spent about 4 minutes on the very first question, the effects of which trickled down to further questions. I find it hard to decide on which question to skip and which to solve because if given time, I can solve any question thrown at me. This is the part that I believe dragged my quant score. Not knowing when to skip, and when to answer. I have this innate fear that if I skip this question my score will go down, moreover what if I have to skip more questions down the line? So, I tend to skip questions that I know for sure can't be solved within the next 1/1.5 minutes after having spent 3 minutes on it already. This is so stupid of me, but I can't help it.
- I remember a few questions from the test and was able to solve them within a minute after the exam but could not do so while I was giving the exam. This is something that I can work on and can easily overcome with more practice.
The official score humbled my mock-induced overconfidence and I need serious help, especially with the verbal section. I have a few questions for the experts and test takers with a similar experience as mine :
1) Since I am out of mocks is it a good idea to purchase
MGMAT/
Experts Global mocks? I have heard that the level of questions is a bit higher than the ones on official mocks.
2) Is there any difference between the difficulty level in an online exam and one taken at a test centre?
3) How should I prepare for verbal? Is my method of taking 600-700 & 700 level OG & Review questions effective? Should I include sub-600 level questions in my verbal prep?
4) Given my performance on the official mocks and the actual score how do I know I am now ready to give the test again? What scores/levels should I be looking at to gauge my preparedness?
5) What's the art of skipping questions on the quant section?
