" The following was prepared as part of a newspaper editorial":
"Two years ago Nova Highschool began to use interactive computer instruction in three academic subjects. The school dropout rate declined immediately, and last year's graduates have reported some impressive acheivements in college. In future budgets, the school board should use a greater portion of the available funds to buy more computers, and all schools in the distric should adopt interactive computer instruction throughout the curriculum."
There is little evidence backing the assumption that interactive computer instruction reduces the dropout rate and increases productivity among students. The various evidence provided to further back the argument is vague and short scoped to provide any substantial proof to the conclusion; never the less, generalize it to outside communities.
The newspaper argues a decrease in the dropout rate due to interactive computer instruction, but fails to provide any quantitative evidence. The dropout rate could have reduced but to what amount and is it substantial enough to be noted. In addition, Nova highschool fails to compare the acheivments of graduate students from more than 2 years ago and as such not much information could be built up to provide a comprehensive analysis.
The newspaper then further generalizes that other schools should adopt similar curriculums. However, the generalization is essentially built upon an assumption with little evidence to prove that it works, and little is given to describe the financial and social standards of other school, little less, about Nova Highschool. For example, Nova highschool could be composed of students from middle to upper class families and thus well financially positioned to carry the heavy costs of the curriculm, whereas other schools may not be in such a privilisged position.
Through the explanation of such fallacies, the argument lacks enough statistical details and a holistic understanding of the environment to provide a generalization and detailed approach to adopting such a curriculum.
