I don't want her to feel that I am exploiting her kindness. So I'll have to plan how and when to send her some thank-you gifts etc.

My brother is using me for some projects on his apartment. He is clueless with tools so I did a ton of things on his place this summer so now he is indebted to me. I like it being that way than my owing him something.

I would give her a gift certificate to a nice restaurant or something after the first school with a note about how much you appreciate all the work she has been putting in and to have a nice night out on you. That would definitely be a lot cheaper than paying some company to do it.

Yeah, my plan is to send her a gift after first school's essays. Then after three weeks, send her the next two schools' essays together. Then another gift. Then we'll see what R2 needs me to do.

A gift certificate to a nice restaurant is a great idea .. I was coming up with much worse ideas. Thanks river !

EDIT: Well, my wife says that a gift card may not look nice because of the explicit $ value mentioned in it. A gift should not have the $ value anywhere. Now I am confused again.

.. and although I got some praises here and there (More rarely than I was hoping), most of the comments just blew me away. And those comments are quite correct. I can't believe that I was feeling so proud of these essays just yesterday :(

ps. The reviewer is this ex-colleague of mine who is just amazing with writing and the language in general. And based on her feedback, I can tell that she understands everything about the MBA admissions just as much as I do (Even if she hasn't read all those books and hasn't visited GMATClub).

I cannot empathize more with your feelings.
I sent my first round of essays to this Alumin of Chicago who is this totally passionate guy about MBA admissions. The feedback.
Decent essays....Good material to start with...
Thats about it..
Other than these, I had numerous points to work on...and I promised to get back to him with the revised essays according to his points.
So, On top of the world before the call.....Totally down and under the earth after the call....
But will keep working....

Its better to get pillaged and plundered so that your defenses get stronger with each attack - I read this Chinese proverb in Osaka at a restaurant and it really applies to the b school essays.

Perspectives from different people are sorely needed. What you think sounds good can be rot to someone else. By getting as much feedback as possible, but also using your judgement, the essays get to be in better shape.

My goals essay underwent 8 revisions and re-edits before I could bring out the elements I needed.

I was so on top of the world when I wrote the first draft, gave up on pursuing my MBA on the 2nd draft, gave up on applying on Chicago on the 3rd draft, and slowly but steadily re-gained my confidence as I read each comment or critique, answered it and also strengthened my essay.

I've had a similar experience, it's also nice to see the different comments/suggestions made by various people. I also found it helpful to share my goals essays with people who don't know me intimately, this way I was able to see if I clearly expressed my goals and got my point across. I've had to make significant revisions to my Tuck goals essays (500 word limit ><) but it's allowed me to do some serious introspection. Also, if you guys haven't checked out Rhyme's post in the best practices thread, he provides some great insights into the "why school X" part of the essay. I found it be extremely helpful.

so far my feedbacks have been pretty surprising. Yes, people were shredding me (in a good way) with my grammar, which I told them not to since it was my first draft, but they still did anyways. ;) Second, people had VERY GOOD comments about how my sentences don't flow into each other, certain things are very boring to read (even if the content is good), and there's too much passive voice. Third, I still "tell" too much instead of "show", so I need to fix that.

Otherwise, many people have told me that my essay content is actually pretty good. One Haas student even said my first draft is probably better content wise than his submitted draft... that's a confidence booster (even though he still shredded me on other things ;))

kryzak, how are you finding all these reviewers. Are these people who you know from before or are you asking current B-school students with whom you networked for the app process to review them?

ncprasad, I get reviewers from various sources. I have 2-3 friends who are good writers to review as non-MBA folks perspective.

I have 2-3 Haas friends who are willing to review my essays (more if I asked and if I need to ask, maybe for a final draft review). I have so many I guess because of luck and my networking using my Cal alumni status. Cal students are also extremely friendly, so if you get to know some of them well, eventually they should be willing to check your essays out.

For Stanford, I only have 1 alumni I talked with that volunteered to read my essays when I'm done, so I'm not going to say no! ;) I might ask one more student if I connect with him once I meet him.

For UCLA, no reviewers yet. But I may make some friends soon.

Kellogg I have one so far who I haven't asked, but he probably would be willing to read a final draft for minor comments if I asked..

I guess in the end you decide by how well you connect with the person and how friendly they are. All 4 schools I'm applying to value team work, and two of them are my alma maters, so I guess I'm lucky in that way. :)

Interesting. I was keen to know if current students would review. I have some pretty good network at Ross and MIT. No such luck at Haas, HBS, Wharton and UCLA

see if you can strike up a conversation with some Haas and UCLA students when you visit, not just the tour guides, but just hang out at the lounges, etc... don't ask them to review your essays until you really get to know them and maybe a week or two later.

Generally someone who is in one B-school should be able to review your other schools' essay for you too. I might ask my Haas friends to help me with my Stanford and UCLA essays too!

some of my GSB friends are so lazy. takes a god forsaken time to even review my essay.
I am already on my 6th edition when they send me a review.

BTW - has Britney just released some new single ..called gimme more, or is it some old song.
Just curious

Following up on Britney - she released a new single called Gimme More. Decent tunes, definitely worth dancing to after a few drinks, worthless lyrics. Will be the new hot 3 minute song at the local strip club..

I am gonna count how many times she and the chorus sings gimme gimme.

I bring you back to the regular programming.

Got one essay reviewed by my neighbor. The bugger had some good points, considering he is an independent movie director. Didnt expect so many valid criticisms from him.

Got some more review comments from a friend who is also an MBA. Another blow :(

If I keep optimizing my Columbia essays based on these comments, when the heck am I going to work on Wharton and Stan? :(

mNeo, by "blow", do you mean they think your grammar is bad or your content? Just curious. I mean, you seem to know a lot about how to write the essays, so I'm surprised they would shred it like that!

Well, comments like, "This sentence is fluffy. You don't show the 'how' in this passage. This passage is more about operational effectiveness rather than entrepreneurial spirit" etc.

I severly underestimated the time it takes to work on others' feedback. My next set of essays will be going out for review much sooner than this.
