First off, this forum seems to be dedicated almost exclusively to those trying to get a 700+ GMAT score and acceptance to Top 10 b-schools and such. I am not one of those people. So here's a story for us middle-roaders with the GMAT. My target was a 550+ to meet the recommended (not required) GMAT score for my school of choice.
I first took the official GMAT practice test over a month ago and got a 500. I took the practice test without even knowing what was on the GMAT at all. I hadn't looked at a single book or piece of information about the GMAT. I then spent the next month studying and improving on my scores and taking various practice tests including another go at the official GMAT practice test. The main book I used for studying was the 2011 Princeton - Cracking the GMAT.
Today I took the GMAT for real for the first time and scored a 500. This surprised me a great deal. Firstly, I felt very good about the Quantitative portion of the test. I felt like I knew how to do the problems and was coming up with the right answers in most all cases. I really expected the Q score to be pretty decent for me. Turns out that I must have been picking all the trap answers or just doing everything wrong - my Q score was a 26. Again, this really suprised me when the scores came up since I felt confident about most all of my answers.
Conversely, I felt like I wasn't performing to my full potential on the Verbal section of the test. This is my strongest suit as far as the GMAT is concerned, but I really felt more confident about how I did on the Q section than the Verbal section. Turns out I got an acceptable 34 on the Verbal section.
It's odd how you feel like you're doing well on one section and maybe underperforming a bit on the other - but the scores are completely opposite of what I thought they'd be. I really felt I did well enough to earn a 550 today, but apparently not. Again, I was quite shocked when I saw that I got a 500. It came up and I just went "what?!". I felt more confident that I earned a 550+ today than on any of my practice tests that I did get a 550+ on. I also find it interesting that all my studying apparently didn't do me one bit of good. I got a 500 on the official GMAT practice test taking it completely blind, and got a 500 on the actual GMAT with countless hours of studying under my belt.
So a 500 it is. My GMAT score was the final piece of the application process, which had a deadline of July 1st so there's no time for a retake. So I guess I'll find out if I get accepted to the program based on other factors such as my essays and recommendations very soon. If I don't get accepted, I will continue my GMAT studies to earn a higher score in time for the next application period. But hopefully I will merit acceptance based on factors other than my GMAT score.
* As a side note, I will say that today was probably an unfortunate test day for me, or maybe not. I am an avid soccer fan so having the US game this morning and then taking the GMAT immediately afterward was probably not the best scenario for me. But again, I wasn't lacking for confidence. The US won a thriller over a superb Algeria team which lifted my spirits heading into the test, and I felt confident about how I did in the Quant section of the test which is my weakest section. But apparently that confidence was misguided considering my score. Hmmm.

stitchjones, are you doing ED on your school or you are doing late rounds? There are many people here that have goals not 700+. Generally if you know the breakdown of your score you can try to raise one section over another but under your situation I guess you are done with GMAT.

I'm afraid I don't know what "doing ED on your school" means! I can only say that the application deadline for my chosen school is July 1st and all my materials have been in except the GMAT score which I took today and they will receive the score in time for the deadline. If not, they have already advised me to just scan a copy of my scoresheet and email it to them for review in advance of them receiving the official score.
And yes, I'm sure there are alot of people on these forums in my situation where they're not shooting for a 700+, but it sure does seem like almost every thread is from someone that got a 650-700+. Didn't seem to be many stories about people that weren't shooting for the stars so I thought I'd share my experience.

When i said ED i mean early decision. But it seems you are shooting for late round for admit this year? I think one of the reasons that you may not see too many people posting 500-600ish scores *might* be (again this is what I think) because of the 650+ stories so they might feel "embarrassed" or they want to do retakes to get to higher goal. But good luck on the admission to your school.
