Hello GMAT Club Members!
I'm excited to share my GMAT journey with you all. I recently scored a 715 on the GMAT Focus Edition, achieving Q90 (100th percentile), V83, and DI84 (97th percentile). While I started from a relatively strong position, the path to 715 required dedication, strategic preparation, making mistakes, learning from my mistakes, and making sure that I do not repeat the same mistake.
Initial Profile and Starting Point Starting with solid baseline scores V79, Q87, DI77 across mocks and 1[sup]st[/sup] official attempt, I knew I had the potential to push higher. However, I realized that reaching the next level would need something different. After thorough research, I chose e-GMAT for its comprehensive curriculum and data-driven approach.
Section-wise Journey and ImprovementsQuant Journey to Q90 - Despite starting with a strong Q87, I wasn't satisfied. My journey to Q90 (100th percentile) was marked by significant improvements:
- Number Properties: Improved hard question accuracy from 70% to 85%
- Word Problems: Achieved perfect accuracy, improving from 75% to 100%
Key strategies that helped:
- Meticulous process following
- Deep diving into error patterns
- Regular practice with challenging questions using e-GMAT’s Scholaranium.
- Focus on accuracy over speed initially, then gradually improving timing
Verbal journey to V83: Starting at V79, my verbal journey was about refinement rather than overhaul. The highlight was my Critical Reasoning performance, where I improved hard question accuracy from 70% to an impressive 87%. This was achieved through:
- Strengthening fundamentals through Master Comprehension
- Developing a structured approach to each question type. Pre-thinking for CR was a game changer
- Regular practice with both medium and hard questions
- Focusing on understanding why correct answers were correct and wrong ones were wrong
These focused efforts helped me improve to V83.
Data Insights Journey to DI84 My DI improvement from 77 to 84 (97th percentile) came through significant accuracy improvements across different question types:
- Multi-Source Reasoning (MSR): Improved from 55% to 75% on hard questions
- Graphical Interpretation (GI): Dramatic improvement from 43% to 73%
- Data Sufficiency (DS): Significant jump from 73% to 93%
Key strategies included:
- Understanding the intersection of verbal and quant skills in DI
- Specific strategies for each question format:
- GI: Developed systematic approach to graph analysis after going through the e-GMAT Course content
- DS: Just needed more practice and e-GMAT’s DI Scholaranium had a variety of questions.
- MSR: Applied Reading strategies learnt in the RC course as well as learning from the MSR course that helped.
- Time management techniques for complex questions
- Regular practice with varied question types
Study Strategy and Resources My preparation was highly structured and focused on:
- Regular practice with targeted quizzes on Schoalarnium and OG resources
- Thorough error analysis after each practice session
- Focus on process skills over mere content knowledge
- Strategic use of e-GMAT's Scholaranium for practice
Test Day Experience On test day, I maintained a calm and focused mindset. The extensive practice with similar conditions helped me stay composed throughout the test.
Key Takeaways for Future Test-Takers- Excellence is in the Details: Focus on improving accuracy in hard questions - this is where real score improvements come from
- Track Your Progress: Monitor your accuracy improvements in different question types
- Strategic Practice: Quality of practice matters more than quantity
- Error Analysis: Regular review and analysis of mistakes is crucial for improvement
Final Thoughts My journey shows that with the right approach, you can achieve remarkable improvements even when starting from a strong position. The key is to stay focused on specific areas of improvement and track your progress meticulously.
Remember, while watching success stories of others (as I did during my preparation), don't just focus on the scores - understand the process and strategies that led to those scores. That's what I've tried to share here today.
Good luck to all GMAT aspirants! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about my journey.
Best regards,
Aayush
P.S. Special thanks to the e-GMAT team, especially Dhruv, Rida, Rashmi and Payal, for their guidance and support throughout this journey. The structured approach and comprehensive materials were instrumental in my success.
