Hello, please can you rate my essay?
The following appeared in a memorandum sent by a vice-president of the Nadir Company to the company’s human resources department:
“Nadir does not need to adopt the costly ‘family-friendly’ programs that have been proposed, such as part-time work, work at home, and jobsharing. When these programs were made available at the Summit Company, the leader in its industry, only a small percentage of employees participated in them. Rather than adversely affecting our profitability by offering these programs, we should concentrate on offering extensive training that will enable employees to increase their productivity.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc
Essay:
The memorandum sent by a vice-president of the Nadir Company to the company’s human resources department claims that the Nadir Company does not need to adopt the costly ‘family-friendly’ programs in order to increase productivity of its employees. He or she asserts that those kinds of programs could adversely affect the profitability of Nadir Company and thus, the company should rather focus on offering extensive training that would actually increase employees’ productivity. Nevertheless, the conclusion does not provide any sufficient evidence to support the argument. Also, there are some certain flaws in the logical reasoning that will be portrayed in the following essay.
Firstly, the author of the memorandum admits that such ‘family-friendly’ programs were implemented to the Summit Company, which is a leader in its industry. Yet, he or she claims that only a small percentage of employees participated in them. This argument seems to be indefinite, as the author does not provide any sufficient data. For instance, we do not know what percent of employees participated in them as well as we do not know whether the productivity of those participants actually increased or decreased. Without such significant information, we cannot actually admit that offering ‘family-friendly’ implements into a company would affect productivity of employees or not.
Secondly, the author proposes that rather than adopting such costly programs, the company should be focused on offering extensive training that will enable employees to increase their productivity. He or she also asserts that such training would be more profitable for Nadir Company than costly ‘family-friendly’ programs. Again, this argument is neither sound nor persuasive due to several reasons. Firstly, the author does not provide the readers with any significant data regarding costs of these two approaches. Thus, it cannot be claimed that one will be more expensive than the second one. What is more, there is no evidence portrayed that such extensive training would actually increase the employees’ productivity. There is always some possibility that the proposed training could have a completely opposite effect, as training could be too intensive, hence employees may feel burnout.
In conclusion, the vice-president of Nadir Company makes several unjustified assumptions and fails to prove any cogent evidence to support them. Furthermore, there are some certain flaws in logical reasoning. As a result, the argument is unsustained and thus, unconvincing.
Thank you in advance
