I can't find the link that showed numbers from each school but it gives the same impression as the above: lots of variety.

If you have an average GPA from an unknown school - then your chances are much less than if you have a 4.0 or 3.9
I think you have a chance even if you are a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond but if you are a small fish in a small pond - why admit you?

That certainly syncs with my one experience with a girl from Taiwan, I am sorry to say. The fact that I have two doctorates certainly "turns some heads" when it comes out in conversation when I'm in China.

When is it appropriate to reveal one's educational accomplishments? I try to hold off in any potential romantic relationships because I am afraid of negative effects – either being too enticing to "gold digging" behaviour as you described or simply that it may frighten the poor girl off before she has a chance to realise that I'm a "regular guy" who just happened to earn advanced degrees along the way. Having one doctorate intimdates some people, having two intimidates even more. I don't like intimidating people, but given what Crystal has said about men being evaluated in part by their accomplishments, it concerns me if I ever find myself "looking" again. (I'm not planning on it.)

bb, please explain to me what would be an "average GPA" from a nameless or unknown undergraduate school.

3.3-3.4 is considered as an average GPA.

School name has a little value but more importantly is the combination of GPA, GMAT, Work Experience and your story. As a rule of thumb, espeically if you come from a no name school is that all 4 criterion should be pretty good and if, for instance your GPA is average/below average, you need to stand out on the other 3 criterion.

Good luck.

Just tell them you don't believe in paying $50,000 a year for an education. Oh, the irony!

But seriously, as others have noted, applications are generally reviewed holistically. Some schools might have a set formula, others might not. Either way, a perceived weakness in one area of your application needs to be offset by an advantage of similar magnitude.
