FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Celebrating Christmas with our MBA Family |
By Joel Austria Before the Christmas break in December, our MBA cohort celebrated Christmas – with the theme ” the Filipino way” , the way we Filipinos do it back home, and so we Filipinos were the hosts.. The fun started a few hours before the event itself, as volunteers decorated the room, prepared the food, and set up the photo booth and sound system. One by one, people started showing up carrying their gifts and looking excited to start the program. NANYANG MBA students having fun at the photo booth The party started with the traditional Filipino feast. We had some Filipino food favorites such as ‘adobo’ (pork & chicken stew) , ‘crispy pata’, (pork knuckles like the ones in Germany) ‘inihaw na liempo’ (grilled pork ), and ‘pancit palabok’ (noodles) . Iris, another Filipino MBA participant, also prepared and served ‘sago’t gulaman’, a cool and refreshing drink with tapioca and gelatin. For dessert, Claire made her special ‘maja blanca’ which is a coconut pudding with sweet corn bits. Steven can’t hide his excitement to finally get to taste Filipino food After the feast, we asked the participants to form three separate teams to compete in Filipino parlor games. First up was the newspaper dance but with an added twist. Instead of just a pair trying to keep themselves within the confines of the newspaper, we asked the teams to send five representatives. It made the game more challenging and it was very interesting how our classmates strategized and executed their game plans. The next game was ‘hep hep hooray’, a game that required fast reflexes and concentration to not commit a mistake when asked to recite the next word in the sequence together with the corresponding hand gesture. The contestants in this game became very competitive and did a really good job of mastering the sequence and action. And so, to determine the winner, we introduced some changes by switching the hand gestures. Finally, we capped off the games with a relay. During the relay, we introduced the contestants to the ‘calamansi’, a fruit that Filipinos love to use as food seasoning. We also asked them to recite a simple Filipino tongue twister, ‘Pasko paksiw’. Just so you know, ‘Pasko’ is the Filipino word for Christmas. Our classmates realizing that the Newspaper Dance is not as easy as it looks Before ending the wonderful celebration, everyone gathered around the Christmas tree for the gift-giving and revealing of each one’s secret Santa. The activity highlighted for us that Christmas is really the season of giving and sharing. It was very interesting to see what the secret Santas bought for their recipients. The most entertaining part for me was when Li Qin received a number of joke-gifts from Pratik before finally getting the real thing. It was very funny to see Li Qin’s reactions and Pratik’s creativity. I was also touched when Catherine gave Emily (Student ExCo President) some home-baked goodies and a special drawing made by her daughter. The Christmas tree was filled with gifts from the Secret Santas By the end of the activity, everyone looked happy and content with their gifts and people were getting ready to leave. But as a final touch to the whole program, Mr. Nick Soriano, our admissions director, arrived with a small washing machine to be raffled off. The winning name drawn was Sumin. But he decided that a woman should win the raffle, and so, after a few more attempts, Charu was lucky to take home the prize. Indeed, Chrsitmas spirit is in the air-gifts! As the day ended, I was very happy that I got to spend Christmas with my new friends and share with them how Christmas can be more fun in the Philippines. |
FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Developing Socially Responsible Leaders-meet the social entrepreneurs |
By Charu Verma One of NanyangBusiness School’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Club’s aims is to help develop leaders who are compassionate, innovative, and who use their business acumen to solve social issues hovering over communities all over the globe. The first and the most vital step towards this aim was taken through finding opportunities for MBA students to interact with budding social entrepreneurs in Singapore. The club wanted to achieve more than just a talk so that students get to experience the journey to social entrepreneurship rather than just a monologist lecture on how to become a social entrepreneur. This made “The Hub” an obvious choice for us to visit given that it is one of the biggest professional centers that not just provide office space to social entrepreneurs but also promote social entrepreneurship. 14 MBA students coming from both full-time and part-time programmes interacted with 5 social entrepreneurs. . Social entrepreneurs from organizations Akaraka, Milaap, The Hub, and Silverline Mobi shed light on various issues that a social entrepreneur deals with and a few examples of how they dealt with those same issues during their journey. Highlight of the day was the unique opportunity to mingle with several social entrepreneurs present at The Hub in their weekly evening get-together. The enthusiasm of us, Nanyang MBAs ,at the Hub made Akaraka invite the MBA cohort to its forthcoming fund raising event at The Arts House at The Old Parliament. We at The CSR Club, will continue to search for more opportunities for MBAs to be a part of such worthy endeavors such as social enterprises such as those in The Hub. |
FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Singapore Delights & Exco Election Party |
One of the important events in our first month of the MBA program was the MBA Student Exco Elections. Nominees gave their election speeches during the Meet-The-Voters session on 15 August and the voting was held over the following two weekends. The results of the election of the Exco and the Club Co-Chairs can be found here. The first event that the Exco organized was the Singapore Delights & Exco Election Party held on 22 August. The class was invited to the MBA Lounge to have an evening of food and fun. Since about four-fifths of the class is madeup of non-Singaporeans, local delights including chili crabs, black pepper crabs, fried rice and fried beehoon were served during the party. After everyone had their stomach filled with the delicious food, we invited our President, Mathew, and our Executive Vice Preseident, Jiajia, to each give us a speech on getting elected, and a general outlook they have for the class. We look forward to an exciting year ahead with the many events that the MBA Student Exco will bring to the class. |
FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge |
The Nanyang MBA ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, organized by the Nanyang MBA Student Exco, took place on 27 August. The event was very successful with a great turnout of participants as well as generous donations from faculty staff and students. It was our honour to have Prof Ravi Kumar, Dean of the Nanyang Business School, to grace the event and enthusiastically participate in the challenge. A video clip of our Ice Bucket Challenge has been uploaded to YouTube here showing the participants in action. We also challenged the MBA classes at SMU, NUS and Insead to complete the challenge. A grand total of USD 700 was raised and donated to the ALS Association on 9 September. We thank all donors for your generosity in making this event a meaningful one. What is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? It is an activity involving participants to dump a bucket of ice water on their head or donate to the ALS Association in the United States. It went viral throughout social media and became a pop culture phenomenon in mid-2014. On August 18, 2014, the ALS Association announced that it had received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period (July 29 to August 18) in the prior year. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2014 |
The Nanyang MBA participated in the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run held on 14 Sep 2014. Students and alumni have been highly encouraged to join this event, and we have been a regular participant for the past few years. The run started at the SAF Open Field near Changi Village and ended at the Changi Prison Complex. There were two categories, namely the 10km Competitive Run and the 6km Fun Run. We proudly participated in the run in our Nanyang MBA t-shirts. At the finishing point, a carnival was set up and we enjoyed several activities such as performances by inmates, foot massage, photo-taking and there was even a selfie challenge. The Yellow Ribbon Prison Run aims to create awareness of giving second chance to ex-offenders, to generate acceptance of them into the community and to support their rehabilitation and re-integration into the community. The theme for this year’s run is “The Road to Acceptance”. For more information, visit their website here. You can also read about the news coverage here. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Amazon ACE Challenge 2014 |
Submitted by Dilina Fernando The Amazon Customer Excellence (ACE) challenge, organized by Amazon India, was held in two phases. In Round 1, 18 top business schools across Asia were invited to form teams to solve and submit three case studies within 96 hours. The case studies were across 6 categories, namely Category Management, Operations, Product Management, HR, Sales, and Onboarding. According to the Amazon representatives, about 3800 teams submitted solutions in the first round, out of which 3 teams were selected from each category into the final round. One team from the Nanyang MBA, Team Stormtroopers comprising of Dilina Fernando, Sharan Grover and Aditya Bhargava, was selected in the Product Management Category. It was the only foreign school team selected to participate in the final round. In the finals, the teams were given 5 days to solve a case which involved giving solutions to real life problems of Amazon India. After submission of the solutions, Team Stormtroopers flew to Hyderabad, India to present their solution on 21st September 2014. The panel of judges comprised of Amazon Senior Leadership in India who evaluated the merits of the ideas proposed. In the end, Team Stormtroopers did not win in the final round in the Product Management category, of which the team from IIM-Bangalore won. However, the experience was truly an enriching one, especially for a team just 2 months into the MBA program. Working as a team on tight academic deadlines, facing a panel of experienced judges, understanding what they look for and what details they expected provided valuable insights to competing even better in the future. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Kayaking at Pulau Ubin |
Submitted by Vivek Negi After getting our brains fried by overdose of case studies, our MBA class was looking forward to a stress buster day at Pulau Ubin Island. We reached Changi Point Ferry Terminal (different from Changi Ferry Terminal and due to this confusion one of our mates had some trouble reaching the place). It was a very different place from the Singapore we know of; no big buildings, not much traffic and life seemed to be going at a leisurely pace. We had breakfast at Changi village while waiting for friends who commuted on their own. There was a lot of hustle bustle at the ferry terminal with people carrying angling equipment, bicycles to enjoy the Sunday in the lap of nature. After a 10-minute bumboat ride, we stepped onto Pulau Ubin Island. The bumboat was shaky while it was parked at the jetty, making it a minor adventure to jump off the boat and the guys (almost all nationalities) took this opportunity to show off their machismo by avoiding a helping hand On the island we were greeted by stray dogs which reminded me of my home in India. We turned right from the jetty and walked up to the Celestial Ubin Beach Resort. After formalities and some photo taking, we jumped onto the Kayaks (there were single and double Kayaks). We paddled hard and raced against each other. Our Student Exco President, Mathew, parked his kayak near a rock to take pictures. It was a cheeky moment as after happily posing for pictures, the others stole his Kayak leaving him stranded, asking for a lift. Next we wandered towards the mangroves and it was great fun attacking each other and having water wars. It was great to see our usually calm Japanese friend transforming into mischief-monger. After kayaking, we took a shower and then went for lunch. It was fun when girls started showing off their sun tan but the fun was ruined when guys joined in As the majority of people wanted to head back, we decided to skip cycling/fish spa. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: A Trip to Sentosa Island |
Submitted by Stephanie Zhao Date: Saturday October 4th After going kayaking the week before, many of us still had not had enough of the sea. Despite a rainy and cloudy weather forecast, we decided to try our luck at Sentosa beach. We left the grad hall at 12:30pm by cab for Vivo city, where we grabbed a Mediterranean meal at La Viva. For some of us, it was the first time trying out Spanish food. It was a rather successful try: nothing was left in the plates. As soon as we finished, we headed to the tram for Sentosa beach. Unfortunately for the most excited ones, they had to learn to be a bit patient, because lots of Singaporeans also thought of going there on that day. We finally reached Sentosa after 30 minutes of queuing. We found a spot to accommodate our troop. We put out our towels and changed into swim suits. The guys led by sports club co-chairs immediately started playing football. We later on switched to playing volleyball. The beach was extremely crowded that day, which made us a bit reluctant to go into the water at first. However, once in the water, we stayed there until dark playing games and just relaxed. After such sporty activities, the famished group sought for a dining place at Vivo city. The night ended at around 10pm, and we took a taxi to come back to grad hall for a well-deserved rest. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Red Wine Tasting Event |
Submitted by Stephanie Zhao, Co-Chair of the Wine, Beer & Liqueur Appreciation Club Date: October 10, 2014 Venue: ACI Last Friday, the Wine, Beer & Liqueur Appreciation Club finally organized its grand opening event: Red Wine Tasting and Etiquette. A la carte, four classic wines: Pinot noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I conducted the tasting session and explained wine tasting etiquette 101 survival basic knowledge. Teaching while drinking wine was interesting but the learning experience for the rest of us was even more fruitful. At the end of the session, most of us became conversant with the wine appreciation vocabulary. The boys especially enjoyed the “tears”, “legs”, “nose” and “bodies”. Of course, an agreeable tasting does not go without proper snacks. And wonderful participants who showed strong team spirit – 14 bottles down, and 120 glasses cleaned. Thank you all for your contribution! For more information about Nanyang Business School click here. |

Details on how micro-financing works and the poverty situation in Malawi was also touched upon. CSR club members who are interested were also provided the opportunity to join Mark in his project. All in all, the lunch talk provided an opportunity for CSR Club members to be involved and be in touch with the up-coming events. For more information about Nanyang Business School click here. |
FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: AIM Accelerate Consulting Competition |
Submitted by Cory Reid, Vice President of Case Competition The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Accelerate business consulting competition was held in the Philippines at the AIM campus in Makati, Manila from October 9th to 11th, 2014. The purpose of the competition is to serve as a venue for young and talented students to showcase their skills and apply what they have learned in school through actual application. Four students from the Nanyang MBA program were selected for the finals: Vivek Negi, Vishal Bhatnagar, Bhrigu Vasish and Cory Reid. The competition is in the second year of implementation and this was the first year it was opened up to MBA students outside of AIM itself. The format of the competition is unique in that each team works directly with a local small or medium enterprise (SME) to tackle their most pressing issues while developing a realistic growth strategy for the company. With over a hundred applicants from business schools such as ISB, NUS and NTU, the event drew talent from some of the top schools in Asia. 24 students were selected for the finals and were grouped into 6 teams of 4 each. Each team was paired up with a local SME about 4 weeks before the finale in Manila. The Nanyang MBA students said the competition was a great learning experience since they had to collaborate with students from different universities to solve a real issue for a Philippines SME. In fact, they only met their teams and SMEs in person when they arrived in Manila two days before the final presentation. The competition also featured seminars on ASEAN integration in 2015, faculty and industry mentors and a 30 minute pitch clinic for each team. The finale on Saturday had each team present for 15 minutes to a panel of three judges, followed by 10 minutes of Q & A. After dinner, the winning team was announced and the award was presented to Team Beauchem, which Nanyang MBA student Cory Reid was proud to be a part of. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Bowling Competition |
Submitted by Sharan Grover On 13th Sep 2014, the Graduate Student Council organized a bowling competition at Chevron, Jurong East. The Nanyang MBA sports club brought it to the MBA students, who greeted it with a fair amount of enthusiasm. Some of us were looking to win the competition, while others just went for fun. However, as soon as the whistle blew for the games to begin, the hidden bowler inside each one of us woke up, with everyone looking to better the rest. Some of us got too involved in the game, getting quite emotional on not being able to win their individual group at least, if not the contest. The camaraderie and bonding that sports brings with it was quite evident, as everyone enjoyed themselves, with even those who were hugely disappointed at not winning, joining in the fun and frolic that followed. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: CSR Club Visits Children’s Home |
Submitted by Ho Xiaoyuan, Co-Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Club On 15 Nov 2014, the CSR Club organised a trip to Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, as part of the partnership with Nanyang Community Club in the Christmas Make a Wish project for the needy children. The Home provides care, protection and shelter to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. During our time at the home, we interacted and played with the children. An important part of our task was to help them to decorate their wish cards for the Christmas, indicating the gifts they would like to receive for the coming holiday. They also wrote thank you cards in advance to show appreciation to the donors for their gifts. The wish cards will be displayed on a Christmas Tree in Nanyang Community Club and the public can adopt the wishes on the card by buying gifts indicated on the cards. The CSR club is also looking at the possibility of publicising this at our upcoming New Year Charity Ball so that attendees who want to participate by buying the gifts can do so. All of us enjoyed a fun and meaningful afternoon interacting and getting to know the children better. We look forward to similar opportunities in future to reach out and contribute back to the society. For more information about Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, click here. FROM Nanyang Admissions Blog: Consulting & Professional Services Perspectives |
Submitted by I Putu Mahendra Wijaya, Co-Chair of the Management Consulting Club Hitachi Global Solution Corporate Talk by Mr. Michael Travis, Chairman Emeritus On Friday, 14 November 2014, the Nanyang Business School has been fortunate to receive a visit from Mr. Michael Travis, chairman emeritus from Hitachi Solutions Ltd. The Management Consulting Club, together with the Wine Appreciation Club, has been honored for being given the trust to host him throughout his visit in Nanyang Business School. The event started at 15h30 with a presentation by Mr Travis titled “Consulting & Professional Services Perspectives”. Within the presentation, Mr Travis shared with the attendants of his experience heading Hitachi Global Solution, as well as some the recent important trends in the professional service industry. Some of the interesting insights that he shared is the scale and revenue partition of Hitachi as a conglomerate company. Founded in 1910 by an engineer Namihei Odaira, Hitachi has grown from its initial business in electric induction motors into large conglomerate in Japanese industry. As of 2014, Hitachi businesses encompass areas from Digital Media all the way to Construction Machinery. No doubt that Hitachi has been recognized in the world as one of consistently top performing companies, as evidenced by its annual subscription to be listed in Fortune 500 global companies. As of Financial year 2013, Hitachi reported top line revenue of $93.4 billion from all of its business units, one of which is Hitachi Global Solutions, which Mr Travis had the experience to lead & grow the business. Furthermore, Mr. Travis also shared his insight about the future of consulting industry. One of the important trends, he pointed out, happens in the sphere of IT development. In particular, he argued that the development of the “internet of things: manufacturing 2.0” – where machine can have “social network” between them – would unleash a tremendous potential in the manufacturing in the new world. Important around the idea of internet of things is the capability of machine to collect data, thanks to proliferation of sensor, and processes them in real-time to be presented either to another machine – which would help crunch those data – or to a human user – who will make the final critical decision in real-time if any intervention is needed. Such real-time data gathering & information processing will bring efficiency to a level never before attained in the past, simply because the availability of data which were not present. As such, the development of internet of things becomes not only the latest fad in the technology world, but could have a tremendous impact in the sphere of strategic planning and decision making in the business world, particularly in the sector of manufacturing and public transportation. Indeed, one of the key takeaways from the presentation is the implication of the internet of things to the consulting industry: we can expect that the internet of things would create a middle-field battle ground between companies that traditionally offers services in strategic consulting, and those that customarily offers services in IT consulting. After an interesting presentation, the attendants were then entertained with a fine selection of wines, cherry-picked by our wine connoisseur, Ms Stephanie Zhao – c0-chair of Wine Appreciation Club; accompanied with excellent light snack matched against the wine, finely selected by our caterer Fusion Spoon. All in all, the atmosphere of the entire session was very collegiate, and we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to talk in person with someone as important as Mr Travis. Indeed, the Management Consulting Club and Wine Appreciation Club hope that the event could mark as the beginning of long-term relationship between the Nanyang MBA program & Hitachi Global Solutions. Bonne Continuation! For more information about Nanyang Business School click here. |
