There are seven coordinating conjunctions that may link independent clauses via a comma. They are easy to remember: FANBOYS

Small examples:

F—for—I do not drink beer, for I do not want to get fat.
A—and—She is a beautiful girl, and her sister is beautiful as well.
N—nor—He does not want to live, nor does he want to die.
B—but—He drives a new Ferrary, but her wife has an old Shevy.
O—or—John has to get a job, or his wife will leave him.
Y—yet—Jerry likes beer, yet he is afraid to get fat.
S—so—I now earn a lot, so I may leave this house.
