Nanyang Professional MBA 2017-2019 participants, Dr Daniel Tay and Dr Joeri Coppens, emerged champions at the first Singapore Life Science Case Competition.
The case study competition focused specifically on Life Sciences in a Southeast Asian context. This allowed both postgraduate students, who have PhDs in Biological Sciences and Chemistry, to leverage on their life sciences background, as well as their complementary and multidisciplinary professional skills in R&D, open innovation and business development.
After receiving the project brief through a short life science consulting workshop by L.E.K. Consulting, participants were given four days to develop a market expansion strategy for a fictional pharmaceutical company which included a10-slides consulting deck and YouTube video pitch. The best four teams were then selected for the finals where teams pitched their recommendations to a jury of senior industry experts and consultants during a public event at the ESSEC Business School.
Sharing about the challenges faced during the competition, Dr Daniel and Dr Joeri said, “As Nanyang Professional MBA students, we combine full-time jobs with weekend MBA classes. This meant that we had to be very focused and time-efficient to solve the case. Also, while the scope of the case study was very broad, the topic itself was very pharmaceutical-specific, making it challenging to find and digest the required data within a short time frame.”
Designing a study framework and timeline – and sticking to it – was the key to delivering a complete solution within a short timeframe.
“It was surprising to see how much work we could get done in just a weekend by sticking to Pareto’s 80/20 rule. Being familiar with your team members, as well as knowing and trusting their capabilities, is essential.”
Having already a strong academic and technical background, both Dr Daniel and Dr Joeri chose to enrol in the Nanyang Professional MBA programme to complement their scientific skills with the relevant business acumen so that they can progress towards more business or managerial functions more easily. What they learnt in the programme came in handy for this case study competition. Dr Daniel and Dr Joeri shared that the elective MBA module on strategy framework taught by Adj Assoc Prof Zafar Momin was particularly useful.
“The module provided us with the mental frameworks needed to efficiently solve the case. Prof Momin, through his many years of strategy consulting experience, also gave us invaluable advice on how to present the recommendations in a professional consulting manner. “
