I always use a 4-in-hand knot. I don't like either of the Windsor knots. The full is just really wide and doesn't look good or tight. Like Johnny said, the 1/2 looks lopsided. If you use a high-quality tie with substantial material, you can get a great knot with a perfect dimple with the 4-in-hand.

I never had a reason to share this video but I do now...

https://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-tie ... ndsor-knot

You should watch it. For two reasons:

1) The "you'll go from this to this" scene is hilarious. The before is someone having a spaz attack at the tie.

2) The "too short" shot is ridiculous.

And I love the "how to take off a tie" part.

All depends on two main factors the fabric of the tie and the shirt's collar (sometimes the length of the tie is important). I like french and italian collars:

so the knot should not be small, I use the half-windsor (called half english on the site). But it is personal, I like the way it looks, and I am used to some brands of ties that fit well to this knot.

In college with our dress uniforms double windsors were required. You can pick them out quickly since they are basically symetrical and slightly larger. They usually fit in the collars perfectly and aren't that hard to do. That said i think I tied my tie maybe once every 6 times wearing it since it was a pain to get it perfect. If it wasn't perfect you got in trouble...ya one positive thing about academy life that works out. Oh and having to take etiquette classes...I can set a mean table and know what fork is used for what.
