Need urgent help with GMAT score!!

Question

I have just t days left in giving my GMAT exam, but I am having a weird problem with GMAT preparations. I have been able to solve OG 12 and 13 questions quite comfortably for the verbal and quant sections. Still my scores are poor in tests.
Some of my scores are:
MGMAT 
Q - 44, V - 36
Q - 42, V - 36

I figured out that MGMAT's quant is a bit more difficult, so I'm not much bothered about that at the moment. The main problem is the verbal section, where I am able to solve OG and MGMAT book questions quite comfortably, but in tests I'm making mistakes. The pattern of mistakes also changes with tests - sometimes I goof up SC, sometimes RC.

Also, sometimes I feel fatigue in verbal section. With just 7 days left in GMAT, this is driving me crazy.

Can someone please help me with this problem? Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello sauravkb,

Since you can solve the questions under practice conditions but struggle under test conditions, it seems that the test conditions are the problem. Your fatigue in the verbal section points to the same problem. One week doesn't leave much time to improve on timing and endurance issues. Continue to do timed practice sets but spend less hours studying in general to avoid burnout. Spend this last week getting a feel for how long it takes you to complete questions/sections and find your unique ways to adapt to timing and fatigue as best as you can. Be sure this week to rest enough, eat well, and think positively and prepare yourself to calm test day jitters as much as possible.

Hi sauravkb,

With just a week to go before your Official GMAT, you don't have a lot of time to make any big changes to how you handle the Test. If it's still possible for you to reschedule your Exam, then you should consider doing so.

I'd like to know a bit more about your studies overall:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What materials have you used?
3) How have you scored on each of your practice CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hi Cassandra and Rich,

Thanks for your valuable comments. Was able to improve a bit on the problem. Took the GMAT exam today and got 720 overall (Q - 50, V - 38, IR - 7). Before the exam, I had also taken GMAT Prep exams again and had scored 740 and 750. Now after all this, I have begun to realise that Quant section of MGMAT is way more difficult and was draining energy a bit more. I found the GMAT quant to be very easy comparatively. Also, the verbal section was a bit more difficult than the Prep exams.

Now I'm considering if 720 is a score I should go ahead with, or retry the GMAT.

Hi sauravkb,

First off, a 720/Q50 is an outstanding score and it puts you in position to apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is not necessary.

Have you thought about which Business Schools you plan to apply to (and when?)?

Hi sauravkb,

If you're still feeling anxious about the GMAT (specifically Verbal, as you pointed out), don't be afraid to reschedule. Remember, business schools won't see that you've rescheduled, and have even changed the rules around canceling a score on test day - which I'm not sure you'll see, considering today is test day (if I'm counting the days correctly).

In any case, keep us posted and let us know how it goes today (or tomorrow if I've counted wrong).
