I've taken some practice tests and my Quant score is horrendous. Basically, the scaled score is around 22 (29th percentile), which I think qualifies as retarded.

I've practiced the problems from the GMAC guides but it obviously didn't help. What am I doing wrong? How can I improve my Quant score? Any specific books/study guides I should look at? Manhattan, princeton review, etc.?

You need to review basic math. Try Arco's Gmat/Gre math review, it helped me a great deal.

If you give a more detailed description of your preparation, people will be able to offer better suggestions as to how you can improve. I you say is that you practiced the problems from the GMAC guide - I'm assuming this is the Official Guide 11. Did you do all the questions? Did you keep an error log? Did you understand the mistakes that you made? Did you time your practice? These are all basic things that many people do to improve their scores. Also, one book may not be enough for many people.

pelihu you are right, I should've provided a more detailed description.

Well, I practiced with the official guide, I could get through the problems in the beginning, which I think would be considered very easy. It's the problems later on that give me trouble. I hit a wall after the easier problems, I'm not sure how to solve the harder problems, don't know where to start. I don't know if it's the fundamentals of Algebra and geometry, statistics, etc. that are giving me problems or that I can't solve problems above a certain difficulty level. If I'm not able to solve a problem that I think is difficult and I look at the solution, it makes sense, but it does not help me on solving the next difficult problem. Does that make sense??

the reason I only put the quant score and % rank is because I thought maybe there are certain levels at which people suffer from the same deficiencies. For ex. don't know basic math or something like that.

Is there something I can use which gives me a good understanding of how to attack the Quant section. For example, with the LSAT, you can learn strategies on how to solve the Logic Games Section which helps on a broader scale to help solve most Logic Games.

Zoli12 - I am very much in your situation. I'm currently using the Arco GMAT/GRE Math Review as a refresher. Many of the fundamentals are there to jog your memory. I also use cracking the GMAT by princeton review. These questions are difficult, but a lot of times on the GMAT if you can learn to eliminate wrong answers it may help you out. That is what PR teaches.

I am considering taking a GMAT Math refresher course at a local college.
