As such, I was already unhappy with the 720 as mentioned in the unofficial but now not only have I scored 5.0 in AWA but also my Quant percentile has gone down in the official report.

Please suggest whether I should retake the exam or whether my V39(88%) will offset my dissappointing q49(83%) score.

while all of those schools are competitive and challenging, i don't think retaking the GMAT is your answer. unless you have a low GPA that you're trying to offset, that score is perfectly acceptable. it's also strong on the Q portion. the V portion is more difficult to improve without a huge time commitment, and i'd say you're better off using that time toward crafting good essays, which will then outweigh the AWA portion of your score. the AWA portion is not really looked upon as that significant, as long as your essays are well written and easy to follow.

I don't understand why you have to fret, your GPA is awesome, GMAT very good. Isn't it the time for you to focus on essays?

A higher Gmat would have helped for sure, and I realize how much more important it is for someone with your background.

On the other hand a score of 720 is usually enough for the admission office to say "ok, good gmat, we have it: let's move on to other parts of the application.

Even if you retake and reach a 760+, would that really be the "make it or break it"?
