Hello everyone!
This is my first post around here so I might sound a little clueless about the GMAT and that is the exact reason why I have come here.
Long story short, I am a 4th (senior) year student majoring in Management Science from Lahore University of Management Sciences. Only recently have been introduced to the field of business analytics and business intelligence, and I strongly believe that this is the field that I want to pursue further. I have done some research online about masters in business analytics programs in the US but I am still confused about a lot of things. I hope you can clear them for me and give me some good advice.
1. Job vs Studies:
A lot of programs say that they prefer work experience but it is not a requirement. I have done a couple of internships but that were not exactly related to business analytics; one of them was about decision analysis though. So should I get a job between taking the GMAT/applying for grad school and completing my undergrad? How important is the work experience? I personally do not want a break in between my studies and I even fear that if i do get a good job, I would lose the motivation to study further.
2. When to take the GMAT?
Whats the latest I can take the GMAT? My current degree demands a lot of study-hours and even if I cut down on some unnecessary stuff, I can perhaps give 5 to 6 hours per week of study time to GMAT till mid-December. I will have a 3 week break at that time which i can devote completely to the GMAT. I will graduate in May/June 2016 and from what I have read up till now, that would be too late for a foreign student to take the GMAT and apply for admissions in the US.
I have heard that I should take the GMAT at least 2 months before the deadline. The problem is that some programs have their application deadlines this very month. Am I too late for admissions in programs with classes starting in 2016. Are there programs that start late in the year and accept applications till, say, june or july?
And I will most likely have to take the TOEFL as well, so that adds to my workload as well.
3. Scholarships:
I will need a scholarship to pay for tuition in the US. I want to ask how likely or easy it is to get a merit or need based scholarship. I have generally done well in my academics (current gpa after 3 years/6 semesters is close to 3.8/4) and also have been involved in some extra-curricular activities. What universities are more likely to give out scholarships? In my current situation I will prefer a not-top-rated program that gives me a scholarship instead of paying for the best program.
4. Universities in Europe:
How about admissions in Germany, Netherlands or the rest of Europe. How are European universities different from American ones in terms of admission dates, scholarships and admission requirements. Are there any particular programs i should be looking at?
I hope I have summarized the situation I am in pretty well. I need advice on what my choices are at this stage and what could be my course of action for the next year or so. I'll be grateful to you for any help that you people can give me! I'd also love to get some links to articles that I should read to clear up the confusions.
Thanks
Ali
