Hello All,
I can see there are several threads similar to this on GMAT CLUB, I am looking for some advice and suggestion to make important step in my life.
Here is my background:
I have a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering , been working from last 7 years in a technical role, and from last year or so in a management position in an international company.
I am currently 33 years old have one young kid (5 years old), and 2nd is expected in few months, wondering how should i plan rest of my career. I am happy in my Job, but as its a technology oriented company, so I don't really see myself working here until retire. I want to have financial security for my family, freedom, feeling of accomplishment, and have a strong desire to be successful. So far i have done very well , i am very happy and satisfied.
Why i am thinking of doing an MBA:
Here is what i have in mind, and people please correct me if i am way off.
With my technical background, and management experience, combined with previous masters degree, I want to add techniques of management and knowledge business in my resumes and skillset.
My aim/hope/objective is to attain qualification and experience from MBA, which will help me to move into different career, such as management consultancy, general management in IT company or business.
Although i am very happy in my current job and position, but i will be lying if i say, i am not looking to change job or industry.
With all things in mind, what you folks suggest, am i on a right track with MBA in mind? If so please help me what kind of opportunities i could avail after MBA, or what doors MBA can open with someone similar to my background.
Schools:
I am local in LA area, but i am open to suggestions.
Corenell-Queens has a EMBA, which is combined mixture of Video conf and campus based. It would suit me perfectly.
Here is what i have in mind, and would appreciate any feedback.
1. UCLA vs Cornell
2. USC vs Cornell
3. UCI vs Cornell
Most likely i will goto Cornell EMBA program if got admission, would this be a good choice? I am looking to invest 130k, which i would take half from my pension fund

Are you comparing those schools' part-time programs or the full-time vs. the CQ-EMBA?
Either way, I'd suggest thoroughly doing your research on each program by going to information sessions and talking to people in industry and alumni to make your own decision on what's best for you.
Here are also a few other things to consider or do further research on:
- Most part-time programs are designed and intended for those looking to stay at their current employer or industry and many students in these programs receive financial support from their employer. I believe it's one of the reasons that some of the part-time programs actually cost more than full-time.
- If you're looking to make a career change, will it be possible from the CQ-EMBA or other part-time programs?
- For management consulting, there is an established process and specific recruiting timeline. Will you have the time to prepare and participate if you're working full-time and going to school?
- Will the same career services support be available to you if you participate in a part-time program?
It seems like you are happy with your job and with a growing family things are about to get pretty hectic for you. Why do you think that you aren't financially secure? How do you define success and personal accomplishment? What kind of "freedom" are you looking for? Can all of these things be found without an MBA? It seems like you may still need to do a little more soul-searching. An MBA is a great place to start, but because it's such a large investment (especially if you plan on pulling from your retirement!
) you should be fairly certain an MBA is the right investment for you and your family before making the leap.IMHO, if you're looking to stay within the same industry that you're currently in, however you want to move up higher in management or maybe one day run your own company, then the CQ-EMBA and part-time programs are a great option. If you're looking to completely change careers (both industry and function), then a full-time program may be a better use of your time and money (although it'll be understandable harder and more taxing on your family). Or if you happen to be completely content with your job (industry and function), but feel underpaid and under appreciated, then I'd suggest finding a new employer. Sometimes who you work for and with can make a HUGE difference.
