Btw, I just started studying 5 hours everyday this week, I also work full time, so it was hard for me to study during the weekdays, usually just 1-2 hours on the weekdays. I will be able to continue with 5 hours of studying next week and on as well, so want to improve my score ASAP, thanks!

Hi, this is my first time asking, and I've been following the forum for a long time, and a paid customer. I've been studying the GMAT since November last year, and have taken quite a few of the GMAC prep exams. Before I purchased the GMAT club questions, I took my first official test and got 560 Q34, V33 (took it on 01/22/2020), and then after I started doing the GMAT club math questions, realizing that I need to up my math a lot, my score went to 570 Q36 V31, (exam 3 on GMAC), then I took Exam 4 a week later and got 580 Q42 V28 (was solely focusing on math). Then March 8th, I did the 2nd exam again, and got 700 Q47 V38. So I wanted to try it again today, to see if I can score in that range again, and purchased exams 5 and 6. After doing exam 5, my score was 490 Q35 V23. Question is, should I be worried? Am I missing something? Any help would help!!!

Hi
In my opinion, you must analyze each test and after through understanding and working on your weakness and strengths, you should take another test.
The rapid increase in score may be attributed to seeing repetitive questions. Check if you saw repetitive questions in each test. Even a few common questions can increase your score a lot.
For a better gauge of your score, appear for a MGMAT/Veritas prep test and see your current level. Then you may not see any common questions and it will give a fairly good approximate score.
All the best.

Thanks! I didn’t see any repetitive questions on the math, and did see 1 or 2 on the verbal.

Hi loiszhang,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, most of your CAT score results - along with your Official Score - show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 560 +/- a few points). You handle certain aspects of the GMAT consistently well, but you also make certain consistent mistakes.

Raising a 560 to the point that you can consistently score 700+ will likely require at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. By extension, retesting by the end of this month is likely NOT a good idea (since the type of overall improvement that you're interested in will almost certainly require far more time and effort). There's no harm in taking the GMAT at the end of March, but if you're going to continue to study (and retest) until you score 700+, then you can potentially save some time, money and effort by continuing on from this point with a realistic Study Plan.

1) Assuming a 3-month study timeframe going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi loiszhang,

While 700 is a great practice test score, I agree that since you had taken that test already, it likely did not provide an accurate baseline score. In any case, the fact that you have yet to break 580 on any of your fresh practice exams and recently scored 490 is a sign that you have a number of weak areas in both quant and verbal that must be addressed for you to achieve your GMAT score goal. So, before taking any more practice exams, focus on improving your GMAT quant and verbal skills. If you’d like some general advice on how to do so, feel free to reach back out.
