Hi ss085,

I encourage you to pursue activities, projects and contributions that would give you exposure to your future career path. Tech skills are valuable in almost every role, so you may be able to come up with activities in which you can contribute with your tech skills while gaining exposure to new functions. With that said, I first encourage you to think more deeply about the marketing or strategy consulting options so you can be more confident in your direction. This way your time will be spent more intentionally. For example, if you pursue marketing, look at the type of marketing you're interested in - the functions and disciplines under 'marketing' can be very broad (social media, digital, content, product, marketing strategy).

It's OK to be unsure and pursue activities with the intent to experiment and try out a new function. I think your tech skills can be enormously helpful in combination with marketing teams, so I encourage you to express your curiosity with marketing contacts. Here are some suggestions for marketing exposure:
- Can you take on a stretch assignment at work with a marketing team?
- Make a connection with your marketing colleagues and see if they could leverage your SW Dev skills on marketing projects as you gain exposure to the function.
- Do you have any mentors or trusted colleagues on marketing teams, who may be willing to let you sit in on some of their staff meetings? After listening in on a few meetings, you'll likely start brainstorming how you can get involved (one thing leads to the next...).
- Outside of work, are there any clubs, organizations, etc that you're involve in (or interested in getting involved in)? You could volunteer your time, focusing on a cause you care about, and see if they need help with marketing. Particularly focusing on MarTech ("Marketing Technology") initiatives can give you some exposure.

I have similar advice for Strategy Consulting. Lean into your tech skills and see if there's a way you can work with people that have more of a 'strategy' role. Your tech skills, experience and insights may be very helpful for them while giving you exposure to a new function. It's going to take some curiosity and creativity on your end to come up with the people and organizations you'll target, but if you're going to make the career shift then I encourage you to be vocal, get used to putting yourself out there with new and exploratory conversations.

Stratus has an offering to help put this together with you in prep for future applications - feel free to schedule a free consultation if you're interested in discussing further. Hope this is helpful direction.

Thanks for the input. Yes I am planning a career switch. I wish to focus on marketing or strategy consulting as my post MBA goal. However, due to my long background in Tech, my professional experience is in Software Development. Do you have any inputs on what activities I can indulge in over the next year to make sure my career pivot is smooth?

Hi ss085,

Deciding when you pursue an MBA is not always easy, so happy to help you think through this. Hopefully my questions and thoughts will help you make the decision, but we can also schedule a Free Consultation to talk through.

As a headline, I'll ask you to consider what would be the benefit of delaying? Academically you're already demonstrating you have the aptitude with a 740 GMAT (nice work!). In terms of your professional experience, it looks like you'll get more leadership exposure, which is helpful. You mentioned some community service as well, which could be very powerful, especially if it fits in logically with your career narrative. Which brings me to an important point - a clear career roadmap. If you already have logical and ambitious career aspirations that you've demonstrated interest of in your past experience (professional or personal), then I encourage you to apply this year in R1. However, if you want to make a big career pivot and really don't have any experience relating to the new career path, then I encourage you to use the next year to get that experience either in your professional or personal endeavors.

Question: I wish to get into one of the top 20 MBA colleges. While I wish to go for MBA this year, I wanted to know if waiting for one more year might help me.

Following is how my extra year will change my profile:

Age : 28 Years (At time of Joining MBA)

Work Experience :
Total : 5 Years at time of Joining MBA
1. Title : Software Developer - GE Digital (1.5 Years)
2. Title: Software Developer - Amazon (3.5 Years) (At time of Joining)

No of Promotions : 1

Target Entry - Fall 2023

Achievements : 1) Enthusiastic Backpack Traveller 2) Completed a Book (Might not be famous though :P ) 3) Freealenced as content writer 4) Unofficially led a team for 1 Year at GE 5) Senior Developer at Amazon and mentored and hired many. 6) Planning to take up basic community service 7) Any additional activities I can do in next 1.5 Years to help my profile (Please suggest)

Also, please note that my GMAT score will expire in 2023 April and if I wait for another year, I will be applying in 2022 October. Will that have a negative impact?
I wish to know how much chances of getting into one of top 20 MBA colleges increase if I wait for another year. Need help deciding when to apply! Mentioned Specialization and top college are priority for me.
