Hi Rich,

Thank you for your response.

I agree with you that there must be some other factors that affected my performance on the test day. But I am unable to figure out what it is.

All the scores that I mentioned here are from my first time attempt of the mocks. I did try them again sometimes section wise just to try some timing techniques. But I haven't mentioned those scores here. Also, I have never seen any repeated questions.

Coming to how I structured my studies:

Quant: I used to pick a topic based on my weakness, review the concepts, practice questions on GMAT club from OG and then from GMAT Club tests related to that topic. I had my own error log to document incorrect questions and my learnings.

Verbal: For SC, I used to revise one topic per day from my notes, but attempted questions from all the types on the GMAT Club from OG and Verbal Review. I had my own error log in which I documented analysis for incorrect questions, or the ones from which I had learnings. I did this based on my understanding and from posts on GMAT club. For CR, I used to study one topic per day and practice questions only from that topic. I also downloaded the Comprehensive CR Guide from GMAT Club to revise the concepts. For RC, I used to practice 2-3 RCs a day.

How long do you suggest I take before retaking my exam to improve my score to 700?

I have purchased an ESR. I am unable to access it due to some technical glitch. I will post it here once I am able to access it.

Hi Pallavi,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. The issue that you had with the marker certainly sounds as though it threw off your performance a bit, but we have to be careful about assuming that that was the 'only' reason you underperformed. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" usually involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) Did you take any of your CATs/mocks more than once?
2) Can you go into a bit more detail about how you spent the last month of your studies? It certainly sounds as though you were putting in a lot of study hours each day, but it's not clear how you were structuring your studies.

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

The PhD application process tends to be a bit more 'rigorous' than the MBA application process is - since there tends to be a small group of highly qualified applicants competing for a relatively small number of PhD 'slots.' As such, beyond having a strong GMAT Score, you'll need a strong OVERALL profile and you'll need to properly 'market yourself' to each individual Program that you apply to. By extension, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:
