Hi everyone,
I have prepared for GMAT for quite a long time. I aim to beat 720 in August, 2014 since my desired school's average quant and verbal scores are 47 and 43, respectively. Today I took the GMATPrep diagnostic test to see where I am on the way. However I totally disappointed with the score 580 (Q47, V23). It seems that I still have to improve a lot to get my expected score. However, I am facing the situation in which not much materials are available now. Please be patient and read what I learnt and give me advice to crack the GMAT.
1- Quant: My aim is getting Q50 ( to compensate for verbal score, hix)
My past preparation: I read the
MGMAT 5 math books (number properties, Fractions, Equations, Word Translation, and Geometry) about 2 years ago. After reading all those books, I changed to Verbal to give time to absorb math knowledge. I returned to math from the beginning of June, 2014. In this one and a half month, I reviewed math by issues, read GMAT club quant book, practiced OG12 questions, and reviewed each correct/incorrect questions. I paid more attention to the questions that were incorrect or took me more time to solve: solving these questions for the second times, noting down the take-away from lesson of incorrect question or the trick to shorten the time.
My final accuracy after completing OG12 are 85% for PS and 75% for DS. Based on the level-of-difficulty category offered by GMAT club, the distribution of accuracy is as following: OG12-Easy question- 95%PS, 86%DS; OG12-Medium question- 83%PS, 73%DS; OG12-Hard question- 78%PS, 66%DS. My average speed is 111s.
Today GMAT Prep test: By allocating more time to the first 10 questions, I tried my best to get them correct. However, I was incorrect in question #3, #6, and #8 and lack of sufficient time to answer the last 7 questions (from q30 to q37). Overall, I got Q47.
Analysis about my weakness: What I think about my weakness now is that my speed is not sufficient enough to make an improvement in later part and that I have not solve as many 700+ questions as required to make a jump to get Q50.
Your advice??? After reading those sharing, do you have in mind how I can improve quant from 47 to 50?
2- Verbal: Although my desired school's average verbal score is 43, I do not think it is possible to achieve that high in a short time, especially, I am non-native English speaker. Thus, my aim is getting V38. If the combination of the score is Q50 and V38, overall score can be 720, giving me hope to be accepted.
My past preparation: I read through the
MGMAT sentence correction guide and CR bible, and finished eGMAT live prep course. I just finished OG12 SC and CR and now I am practicing OG12 RC. After reading
MGMAT sentence correction and CR bible, I was still confused how to read, understand and solve verbal. After taking eGMAT course, I get better understanding of what the test makers want to test. I almost solved all concept files and practice files in the eGMAT course twice. I forced myself to closely follow the steps to solve the questions: read and understand the passage first, pre-think the answer, and finally POE. For all SC, CR, RC, I summarize all types of question and answer. For all CR questions I got wrong, I wrote them on my note, cracked them in detail to try understanding test maker thoughts and the underlying logic. For SC questions, I closely follow the SC issue checklist (S-V agreement, modifier, verb tense, parallelism, ....) and try to redo all wrong questions until I know where I get wrong. For RC, I read and comprehend the passage first, take note the structure, and summarize the main point on my own words before processing to the questions.
My accuracy after OG12 is SC-62%, CR-76%, and RC-65% (in progress). Based on the level-of-difficulty offered by GMAT club, the accuracy is as following: OG12-Easy question-CR 95%, SC 70%; OG12-Medium question: CR 80%, SC 59%; OG12-Hard question: CR 62%, SC 58%. This is the result for the first time solving OG12 questions. My average speeds of CR, SC, and RC are 131s, 87s, and 124s, respectively.
Today GMAT Prep test: I think my verbal accuracy and speed is not bad, giving me hope to have verbal score around 32-33. However, the results from the GMATPrep is truly unexpected and makes me worried a lot. Same as in quant section, in this section I allocate more time to get the first 10 question correctly but I indeed got 4 out of first 10 questions wrong: Q#1(SC), #4(RC-inference), #7(SC), #9(CR-fill in the blank). I think that having the first question (SC) wrong heavily hurts my final score. From q#11 to q#26, 7 questions are wrong as following: q#15 (RC-Inference: I only guessed the answer), q#16(SC), q#18(SC), q#22(SC), q#24(RC-inference), q#25(RC-main point), q#26 (CR-strengthen). But the worst thing is that I run out of time to solve the last 14 questions (from q27 to q41). As the result, 11 out of 14 are incorrect (hic!).
Analysis about my weakness: I think I was weak in controlling the time for verbal section. But I also wonder if my preparation is good enough to get me really understand what I thought I understood before. During practicing, I timed myself while solving the questions, used
error log to figure out my weakness, and noted down and analyzed all my weakness. For now, I almost did my best to comprehend all the materials and questions, but I still cannot achieve v32-33 prior the real test. What should I do, I am so worried!!
Your advice??? After reading those sharing, do you have in mind how I can improve verbal from 23 to 38?
With this result, I intend to postpone the real test. However, since 1) December is the deadline for applying to my desired school and 2) I am pregnant and will deliver the baby soon this October, my only choice to take the test is this September. Thus, totally, I only have 2 month left. How should I do?
Thank you so much for your time and suggestion!!
