Need improvement; Give your suggestions

Question

Hello All, Scored 460 in MGMAT CAT1 (Q36, V19) and after 1 month of preparation I took another MGMAT CAT2 490 (Q37 , V21) :oops:

. From both these test I analysed that my weakness are Quants: Geometry, fractions, percents, word problems and rate problems. Verbal: Sentence correction (correct - 11, wrong - 4), critical reasoning (correct - 2) and reading comprehension (correct - 4) are disastrous. PS quests (Total - 22 , Correct - 9, Wrong - 13) and DS quests (Total - 15 , Correct - 7 , Wrong - 8). I am pretty good in arithmetic and algebra topics. I am damn sure that I need to concentrate more on verbal but I expect to improve my quants score with atleast 6-8 points in my next exam. Give your suggestions so that I can reach Q45 in my MGMAT CAT exam

Hi sbalaji269,

These 2 CAT scores are remarkably similar, which means that you're still handling your CATs in the same way as you were when you started. To raise your scores, you'll need to learn/practice new Tactics and make some active changes to how you 'see' (and respond to) GMAT questions.

1) How long have you studied?
2) What materials have you used?

3) What is your goal score?
4) When are you planning to take the GMAT?

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC

1. It has taken almost 2 months i.e started my preparation from Dec 2015.
2. So far I have used OG 13, 12, manhattan series books and kaplan math workbook.
3. Aiming for 700+.
4. Planning to take official GMAT by March end 2016.

I am sure that 2 months is sufficient to reach my target and suggest some materials for CR which can improve my Verbal score.

Hi sbalaji269,

With a 700+ score goal, you're going to have to make some BIG improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.

Many Test Takers who use a 'book-heavy' study approach tend to get 'stuck' at a particular scoring level; based on your CAT scores, that's likely what's happened to you. With your current planned Test Date, you have less than 2 months of study time, which is likely not going to be enough to hit your goals. You're likely going to need at least 3 more months of consistent, guided study to raise your scores to that level. You will also likely have to invest in some new, non-book study materials that will focus on teaching your the necessary Tactics for both the Quant and Verbal sections.

Hi sbalaji269,

Since you have so much time before you're going to apply to Business School, you have LOTS of time to study for the GMAT and 'lock up' that strong GMAT score that you're after. As such, you shouldn't feel the need to try to rush through your studies. Given your recent CAT scores, you would likely find it beneficial to invest in a GMAT Course of some type (either Guided Self-Study or instructor-led). That type of consistent professional advice, combined with a proper Study Plan, is likely what you need to hit your score goals.
