Hi Experts

Can anyone please give me an idea about how realistic the KAPLAN Free test is? I just finished the full one today, it was a 42 in Quant but a 37 in Verbal. This 37 is 7 points more than the last 2 GMAT Club verbal tests.

So just a bit confused as the Kaplan scores are generally lower than the actual ones - however this turned out higher than GMATClub tests.

So a bit confused about which one is a better indicator. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi PinakiRDas,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC, but the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion).

In addition, there are a variety of factors that can impact YOUR performance, including the time of day that you take the CAT, how realistic the testing environment is, whether you take the FULL CAT or just take some of the pieces, how well-rested you are, etc.

Before I can offer you the specific advice and analysis that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Yes I did - just 1 and that also a week back 36 Q and 31 V
vs
41 Q and 37 V (in Kaplan)

One thing - I did notice some questions in Kaptest showing as Experimental but can't see such info in the GMAC practice test. Though I do know there are experimental questions in real GMAT not sure if those are in the GMAC practice.

I think that the official one is the best indication of your current score. If you need any advice regarding your study plan, feel free to reach out.
