With your profile, you’re already in the running for top deferred programs. The biggest gap is extracurriculars, which can showcase leadership and initiative. Try to engage in something meaningful—mentorship, startup, or community work. Also, aim for a stellar GMAT to solidify your application. You're on the right track!

Hi abdul312,

Congrats on your achievements so far. The MBB and FAANG internships are certainly impressive and speak to your capabilities.

The GPA is a bit below the HSW average though. May I ask is your T10 for overall undergrad program ranking, or T10 CS program?

The reason for asking are two folds:
- Since your GPA is a bit on the low side, it needs to be looked at within your specific context.
- Deferred admission is very competitive, maybe even more competitive than normal MBA admission. So every advantage you can get is important - in this case, your undergrad prestige.

Hi all — I’m an international, currently a junior at a T10 U.S. university pursuing a CS degree. I’m planning to apply to deferred MBA programs at HBS, Stanford GSB, and Wharton next year, and would appreciate some honest feedback on my positioning + advice on what to improve in the coming months.

Quick Profile:
  • International | FGLI | Strong personal story
  • 3.6 GPA (CS major)
  • MBB consulting internship (summer)
  • FAANG SWE internship (off-cycle during academic year)
  • Currently prepping for the GMAT (taking it in a couple of months)
  • Light on extracurriculars at the moment

Would love insights on:
  1. How competitive I am as of now
  2. What areas I should prioritize to strengthen my app
  3. How much ECs actually matter at this stage

Thanks in advance!

Hi abdul312,

Your profile demonstrates a strong foundation—solid academics, impressive internship experiences at both MBB and FAANG, and a unique personal story, which can be a great differentiator in your applications.
To further strengthen your candidacy, we’d recommend:

  • Extracurricular Involvement – Engage in leadership roles or initiatives that showcase impact beyond work and academics. Schools highly value well-rounded candidates who contribute meaningfully to their communities. Consider starting or leading an initiative, mentoring others, or deepening involvement in a cause you’re passionate about.
  • GMAT Preparation – A strong GMAT score will be key in reinforcing your academic capabilities. Make sure to dedicate enough time to prep and aim for a competitive score.
You already have a strong foundation—building on extracurriculars and securing a high GMAT score will help position you well for HBS, GSB, and Wharton.

Hi abdul312
Priyanka here from ARINGO. To answer your questions-

1. How competitive am I as of now?
Your profile looks good on the surface. However, the programs you're targeting are extremely competitive, thus you need to have an overall strong profile.

2. What areas should I prioritize to strengthen my app?
GMAT: Aim for a score close to 695+

Extracurriculars: This should be a top priority. You need to demonstrate leadership, impact, and a well-rounded profile to the adcoms. Think about a few meaningful activities where you can demonstrate a real difference.

Storytelling: Crafting a compelling narrative that highlights your unique background and aspirations will be crucial. Think on how you can connect your experiences to your future goals.

3. How much ECs actually matter at this stage?
ECs do matter a lot, especially for deferred MBA programs. Adcoms at these programs are looking for future leaders. They want to see that you're already making an impact and have the potential to excel.

Good foundation with a CS degree from a top university, elite internships at MBB and FAANG. However, to maximize your chances at HBS, Stanford, and Wharton, you’ll need to address a few key gaps.

First, aim for a 730+ GMAT (the higher, the better) to offset your slightly below-median 3.6 GPA and reinforce your academic strength.

Second, leadership and extracurriculars are critical for deferred MBA success. Top programs seek candidates who have already demonstrated initiative beyond work. Look for high-impact opportunities—whether by leading a student organization, launching a meaningful project, or driving change in your community.
Since deferred programs favor applicants with a clear and forward-thinking career vision, ensure your narrative is sharp: why an MBA now, how it bridges your current skills, and where you want to go next.

Next, secure recommenders who can highlight your leadership, drive, and potential in a differentiated and story-driven way.

With these refinements, you’ll be in a much stronger position—not just for HBS and Stanford, but also for other top deferred programs like Columbia, MIT Sloan, and Booth.

Finally, network with alumni and attend events and webinars. These efforts will help you better understand your target schools and refine your fit and application approach.
Keep pushing forward—strategic improvements over the next few months can make a huge difference. Best wishes for future opportunities.

It's overall T10 but not T10 for CS(it's T30 for CS). So I'm guessing that's not a good thing?

Hi abdul312,

There are two sides to everything. In this case, I personally think T10 overall might actually give a little bit more edge, due to the prestige/selectivity associated with it, as well as the somewhat different nature of education you receive from an Ivy/Ivy+ institution. A T10 CS program may provide a stronger technical training, but I'm not sure the adcom would place a lot of emphasis on that.

Others have given you great advice above, which I mostly second:
- Get an elite GMAT score to compensate for your GPA (Your GPA is still excellent. It's just the competition is fierce.)
- Try to get involved and demonstrate leadership and impact, to further differentiate yourself.

Good luck.
