Hello everyone,
As the title says, I need some advice on how to improve in my last week before GMAT (I have the exam on the 29th of November). I started seriously preparing for the GMAT two weeks ago, I know it's late, but that's also when I started applying for the MBAs.
I did the first simulation with GMATPrep today and I got 620, but I know I can do a lot better. Here are my weaknesses right now:
1. Time strategy: I love taking the time to solve a problem, that's how I was taught in school. I know the theories with POE, Plug in, etc. but my instict sometimes takes over and I find myself indulging in a problem for 4-5 minutes. I ended up answering the last 10 questions in less than 10 minutes.
2. Data Sufficiency: for me, if I can answer the question with the option given, it's sufficient, even if the answer contains multiple numbers (ie. x can be 3 or 4). I know both, so I know what x is. I need to switch this to x can be only one value to be sufficient I guess.
3. I'm making too many mistakes in a row, which brings my score down and then I need to work my way up again.
4. I still need to revisit some old friends: slope, interest, probabilities.
5. I hate passages: I lose my patience and my focus with them, I read some techniques about the first line in each paragraph being the one that matters, didn't work for the test.
6. Sentence correction: I naturally construct complex sentences in English (more than needed sometimes), so I don't always go for the easiest answer.
7. What is the author assuming: I got a bunch of this kind, instead of strengthening, was surprised because I haven't seen them before.
So what I was thinking was to focus on the math I need to revisit, then exercise Data Sufficiency, passages and SC mostly, with a bit of the others in between. I was also thinking of buying the Manhattan Advanced Quant and the SC from them, is it worth it for one week? Until now I have been working with online resources mainly, but I feel the need of something more structured.
One more thing worth mentioning: I've been accepted to one of the schools I am applying to and the other one told me last week they will give me a conditional offer (had the interview with them), when I take the GMAT and they get the score I am basically in. Their average is 650, but I would love to do more than that (my secret goal is 700).
Thank you for reading and I am hoping I will get some advice from someone.
Regards,
Andrei
