Thanks for the reply to both BrazilianPhD and Rich.

Studies:
1) How many hours do you typically study each week? Do you try to study throughout the week or do you only study on the weekends?
Since I have a full-time job, my study hours are
1-2 hours on weekdays (2-3 days/week)
3-5 hours on weekends (Sat and Sun)

2) Did you take the FULL CAT each time (with the Essay and IR sections)?
I always took the IR also, but I have skipped the Essay section so far.

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
My target score is somewhere around 650-680.
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
I have book an exam on 26 July 2017.
Perhaps I should consider postponing the exam given my poor results?

6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
I'm planning to apply for Full-time MBA either in HK or Singapore.
These are the school I have my focus on.
HKU
HKUST
NUS

Thank you :)

Hi gmatclub fellow members,

I'm writing to ask for some suggestion on my study and CATs results.
Here are some of my background

Education
- B. Eng. Communication and Information Engineering (Thailand)
- GPA 3.26

WE
- 4 years - general stuff (difficult to explain since I work with my parent's company)

I started studying on GMAT in Feb 2017.
Here are what I have studied along with the CATs result along with way.

1) Early Jan
Not so much study here, since I was doing a few sets of questions on different sections.
This is just to get a glance of what GMAT is, at least that what I thought.

2) 27 Jan
Took the first GmatPrep CATs which I shouldnt have done it since I haven't study the concepts.
Results as following:
Combined : 530 / IR:3
Q44 -> PS:47 / DS:42 / Arith:44 / AlgGeo:47
V20 -> CR:28 / RC:19 / SC:15
I know right away there are tons of work needed to be done on the verbal section.

3) 5 Feb
Took another GmatPrep CAT - again, I didn't read the gmatclub forum yet....
Time spent doing questions in both quant and verbal...
No structured study yet.
Combined : 570 / IR:7
Q44 -> PS:45 / DS:42 / Arith:42 / AlgGeo:45
V25 -> CR:38 / RC:18 / SC:21
Hah! At least I have some improvement in verbal here!
However, its way not enough, a lot of study required in verbal.

3) Late March
I was trying to self study the verbal section.
But I had no clue of what I was doing.

4) April
Missing 3 weeks of study due to traveling.
However, all my study here was in eGmat course.
I was also doing questions in eGmat.
My score was horrible in both SC and CR.
But I'm not sure why my CR score was way better compared to SC score in GmatPrep.

5) 27 May
Took another CAT (one that I took on 27 Jan)
To be honest, all I can remember was only 1-2 questions...
Combined : 570 / IR:7
Q47 -> PS:47 / DS:50 / Arith:48 / AlgGeo:47
V21 -> CR:31 / RC:20 / SC:16

Great.... after a month of study on verbal only on eGmat.
My verbal score decrease from V25 -> V21 and my quant increase from Q44->Q47..

Is there something wrong with my study?
Need some advise T___T

I just started doing MGMAT SC book and planning to take another CAT this weekend.

Thank you for reading.

Hi sobhark,

I am sorry to hear that you’re facing issues with your GMAT preparation, and I understand how disheartening it must be.

However, you need to understand that progress in GMAT preparation is dependent on multiple factors such as:

    • How methodical your preparation is

    • How consistent your approach to questions of any section is

      We advocate consistent approaches for questions of each section – the 3-step process for SC questions, for instance.

    • How well you incorporate the feedback provided by the system

    • How you analyze your question attempts

      o How do you analyze your incorrect attempts

      o What parameters you use to identify the improvement areas

        Scholaranium provides wonderful analytics to help you with the same.

    • What action item(s) you take to address the above improvement areas

      o How do you address the conceptual gap(s)?

      o How do you address the gap(s) related to the application of process?

I noticed that you haven’t gotten in touch with us regarding the issues you’re facing with your preparation. :(

We offer strategy consultation for students who are stuck with their preparation in a similar fashion to help them better understand the lapse(s) in their approach and guide them towards their target score in an effective manner.

Drop in a mail to support@e-gmat.com providing the above preparation details, your target GMAT score (along with the score split), and your GMAT date so that our strategy experts can work with you and help you with your preparation. :)

Regards,
Krishna

Hi sobhark,

Test Day is a rather specific 'event' - the details are specific and they matter, so you have to train as best as you can for all of them. The more realistic you can make your CATs, the more likely the score results are to be accurate. The more you deviate, the more "inflated" your practice scores can become - and that's likely what has happened here. By skipping the Essay section, you've been taking shorter, easier Exams that require less effort. By extension, it's likely that your practice CAT scores are not accurate. In the future, you must make sure to take your CATs in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.).

Assuming that your current ability is in the low-500s, it will likely take another 3 months of consistent, guided study for you to hit your score goal. By extension, you would likely find it beneficial to push back your Test Date. You might also find it useful to learn/practice some new Tactics.
