So for the past 3 months, I have been preparing for GMAT with a combination of....every textbook I could find including the OG and many others. I went through the OG 2ce and I used Veritas Prep Practice Tests as my go-to for CATs. I used other textbooks as well, but I think I went wrong by not sticking to one (I just got bored so easily and ended up switching). Still, when I went in to take the test today, I expected to get something around a 630. But, I was disappointed when I saw my score. I only got a 530. This was lower than the first time I had ever even taken a practice test months ago.

My usual scores on the Veritas Tests were around Q34-38 and V35-38. However, on the real test, my Q score was 28 and my V score 35. I'm confident I can pull up my V score up by the time I plan to take the test again. But, I really don't know what I should do to improve my Q score. I went through the OG quant sections 2ce, I kept an error log, I reviewed math fundamentals... It seems like a lot of users here on gmatclub struggle with the verbal section more than quant., but I'm the opposite. I haven't done much math over the past 10 years and it was definitely not my best subject in school, but I really thought I had built a solid foundation to attack the quant. section confidently.

I understand that no practice tests or books will be able to perfectly mimic the official GMAT questions, but I'm wondering if there is a consensus on which practice tests are MOST like the GMAT. I'd also love recommendations for math textbooks (and preferably youtube videos) that people found especially helpful when preparing. Please keep in mind I'm NOT naturally gifted in math and I have not needed to use any forms of complex math for years. Materials with basic, but also detailed explanations would be great.

Hi
In my opinion, you should study from the Mgmat guides for Quant and Verbal. They are comprehensive and cover the entire syllabus of the Gmat. The explanations are also given in detail. Alternativelt you can refer to the Ultimate Quant megathread of Gmatclub to study theory. Regarding the tests, the tests that most closely resemble the actual test are the Gmatprep tests. You can download two for free from mba.com and buy Gmatprep pack 1 and pack 2 each consisting of 2 tests for more practice.
Hope it helps.

Thank you for your recommendations! I will definitely take a look at the Manhattan GMAT guides and go through each of them. I have a collection of random books from people I know who took GMAT already, but I will concentrate my studies on this one comprehensive collection. I already downloaded GMATPrep in the past, but I had trouble running the program on my laptop. I'll give it another try or maybe open it at the library instead.

I really hope this will do the trick. Thanks again!

Hi yonseiglobalstudent,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:

When you took your CATs:
1) On what dates did you take each of your CATs? Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you took your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE (re: on a prior CAT, in an online forum or in a practice set)?

Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. However, raising a 530 to a 680+ will likely require at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hello Rich,

Thank you for your thoughtful response. Although it may be unlikely, I will try to make a miracle happen and bring my score as close to 680 as I can by the time I take my next official test in July. I have already spent months studying for this test and don't have much time before I must submit my score to my prospective school. I like to believe that, if I put my mind to it, I can accomplish almost anything. Of course, there were times when I took the CATs at home, didn't take entire CATs, took longer breaks, etc. Like many others, I study for the GMAT at the end of a long day and have other things that take up my time. But, there were also CATs that I took while trying to mimic the time constraints of the official test. I will try to do this more often this time around.
