Hi all,
Okay I’m a little confused. I’ve been wanting to get an mba for a very long time but now that the time has come to choose the schools I want to apply to I’m a little lost. I’m going to go to the QS mba event this Sunday in San Francisco and I need to narrow down my options. I have a few schools in mind (CMU, Georgetown, BU, …) but I need your help to make sure these schools are within my reach. Here’s is a little description of my profile (sorry I didn’t mean to write a novel but I felt like you needed all this information to be able to give a good piece of advice). By the way I’m 26 years old and come from France.
Education:
- Graduated in June 2007 from a second tier engineering school in France (do adcoms even know what French schools are 1st tier or 2nd tier?) with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Studied in Munich for six months as an exchange student at a top German university.
- No GPA available (my school does not compute GPAs). I tried to figure an equivalent and I came up with 3.0 but all my classes were graded on a curve.
- Involved in a student association participating in the Shell eco marathon (
https://www.shell.com/home/content/ecomarathon/ check it out it’s kinda cool

)
- Worked part time on Saturdays for a couple of years during college.
Languages
- French: 1st language
- English: fluent
- German: rusty fluent (Would come back quickly if I had to speak it. I speak a dialect from east of France similar to German)
Work experience
- Have been working in the US for a small automotive company as a manufacturing engineer since the end of my semester in Germany (including a mandatory six month internship required by my school to graduate).
- Got hired after internship and was later petitioned for H1B visa but did not get it. (I then married my girlfriend and became resident). Got promoted in January 2010.
- My duties include very technical stuff (tooling design, customer applications, …) and project management (new product introduction, tooling procurement, …)
EC
- Started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in April this year but other than that no real community involvement after college (major weakness).
- Activities: tennis, photography, rock climbing.
Objectives
- Long term goal: getting a general management position in a large international company
- Short term goal (post-mba):
Option 1: going into consulting for a few years to get exposure to a broad range of projects and then go back to the industry.
Option 2: joining a leadership development program within a large company.
- However, I’m very open: If another opportunity comes along I may change my mind and go for finance for example (although I believe it would be more difficult with my background).
GMAT: target score 700
TOEFL: 118/120.
If you read all of this, thanks for your patience! If you did not, no problemo

I forgot to say that I’m also interested in schools in Europe, especially UK.
All advices are welcome!
Thanks again for your time.
