I had a doubt regarding an explanation given in Foundation of GMAT verbal book (Mixed Drill 4.9)
The sentence given was :
"It seems that everyone has brought loved ones to watch them graduate."
I thought it should be : It seems that everyone has brought loved ones to watch themselves graduate
Since "everyone" is singular and "themselves" is also singular.[If i am not wrong] And since they brought loved one to see THEM graduate. I thought a reflexive pronoun would make sense.
But MGMAT book has given the below explanation. A. Them is plural and does not match with everyone, which is singular. Fix this sentence by saying, “It seems that everyone has brought loved ones to watch him or her graduate,” or the less awkward, “It seems that all of the seniors have brought loved ones to watch them graduate.”
Please help me understand why "him/her" should be used and not "themselves". What is the reason for not using reflexive pronoun here?
Thank you

As the book states, "him/her" is singular, while "themselves" is plural.
