I too think in the same way. It is already late if you want to submit 6 applications for fall 2008.

i did gmat early december and did 4 and 3/4 apps in 4 weeks. it was hell. couldnt' take time off work. i'm a practiced and efficient writer, so i got through it, though you'll notice my 5th app didn't quite happen. from my experience, that approach is NOT recommended. If you know what you're doing and could take a bunch of time off, you could do it. but you probably can't. take the gmat. if it goes badly, re-evaluate then.

second that. it took many of us 2-3 months to do 3-5 applications. Do NOT underestimate how long it takes to do good applications.

Yep, especially if you're applying to Chicago GSB and Stanford, the GSB's presentation and the Stanford's "what matters most" essays are very time consuming.

Really??? Do you work at Mackinsey? hahahahaha

I spend a whole month thinking, re-thinking, changing things, lay-outing, it was very "painful". In a couple of weeks I will know if the time was worth it...

My ppt wasnt too bad, took me a lot less than essays. I think I did it in probably 3 or 4 days. I had something that was really easy to decide to do it on. I went for a much more illustrated presentation. A lot of people are going to just make lists and bullets of stuff in an attempt to make it almost another essay. I wanted something more interesting than that. The adcoms read enough essays that I think they will appreciate something more visual.

Also I made sure NOT to use the 200 words. They pretty much said that they wanted the ppt to stand on its own so I made an effort to have it make as much sense as possible without resorting to explaining everything.

I think after this is all over it would be fun to post all the ppt presentations and see how everyone attacked that question. Though we may want to take those down before people start applying next year incase GSB asks for a ppt again next year.

I would not recommend this. I took my GMAT around Oct 10th and still made Stanford's R1 deadline on Oct 22nd. Even that nearly killed me and I had my essays pretty much done. Do not underestimate the time it takes you to self report transcripts (or request them), type out contact info, tell them your accomplishments, etc. Either take the GMAT now and then apply or think about deferring till next year.

I'd second this... the essays alone are a good enough reason to say that the timeline is too tight... but even the simple stuff - asking for recommendations, getting transcripts, identifying phone numbers, etc can take a few weeks to organize...

Last year, HBS wanted phone numbers for all my extracurricular activities.

well, it's HBS... I was hearing from students at Haas who interviewed with HBS last year that they try to break you down completely during the interview.
