So.....the title pretty much says it all. I did not perform and failed miserably.
590 (Q44, V27)
I spent the latter part of the day contemplating what went wrong after I learned my score and still could not recover from the shock. Needless to say, I will not have a happy new year.
Test Center Experience
I scheduled the test for 9am and I will never do it again! Even though I am not really a morning person but I still managed to get up, take a shower and head out. However, when I got to the testing center, there were at least 10+ ppl waiting to be checked in! I believe most ppl were taking the GMAT and wanted to get it done before PV takes over in 2006. The whole waiting around process was very nerve wrecking as I was in a gun-ho mode and wanted to get started ASAP. But it felt forever before they finally called my name......Finally got settled down, plugged in my ear plugs and started writing down the time grid before finally hitting "START"
AWA
Fairly straightforward. No surprises here. I felt confident in both my style and content. Took the 5 min break. Finished 2 minutes early. Still very nervous.
Quant
Again, still very very nervous. First question was a very easy even/odd question. Then, 2nd question, a combination question!!!!!!!! Got through that..there were several tricky word problems, and I think I must have missed one early on because the difficulty never got to the level that I was expecting; spent too much time on the word questions and had to hurry up and finish the section in time. The difficulty level was comparable to OG but much much easier than GMATPrep <Probably because I was missing all of them>. I felt that if you understood the basic concept, you'll be fine. Also got one question on compound interest, geometry (hexagon)......Took the 5 min break.
Verbal
Now the real beast. Started with couple SCs, a CR, then the first RC hit. It was a business related RC, fairly straightforward. I was still on track for time....then somewhere in the middle near the 2nd RC, I royally screwed up and never recovered. I believe it was a RC about volcanos/lava and I spent too much time hunting for details. Time was running out and before I knew it, I had 10+ questions left with 12 min remaining. So for the rest of the 10+ questions, I had to rush through them, not to mention it included the last RC passage about ants.
Needless to say, I'm devastated and no matter what anyone says, its really dissapointing. For the last 3 months, I dreamt and slept GMAT. After work, its GMAT. On the weekends, its GMAT. I could probably count with my two hands how many times I've gone out with my friends. I'm not sure what went wrong, but it could be my timing, luck, or just generally, not prepared. I don't know anymore.
Here are my CAT scores:
PowerPrep1 (Before OG) – 680 (Q48, V34)
Princeton Review Online – 570 (Q42, V26)
Kaplan CAT 1 – 540 (Q34, V24)
Kaplan CAT 2 – 600 (Q38, V35)
PowerPrep 2 – 720
GMATPrep 1 – 640
GMATPrep 2 (3 days before the test) – 710(Q49, V38)
Preparation
I started preparing in September and started participating actively in this forum. I only started preparing for verbal at the beginning of December (and the score showed).
I finished OG 10 and OG 11, went over Kaplan 800 and found math to be too easy. I also bought
MGMAT’s SC guide and went over some very good verbal notes. I kept an
error log and reviewed them a week before the test. Re-did all the incorrect problems I got wrong. I started working on the 1000 SCs and finished roughly about 300 of them.
By the time of my test, I had a RC hit rate of 90-95%, 90% on CRs and 85% on SCs. So I was fairly confident in RCs, as I developed a strategy of reading actively and taking down notes. But in the end, it was the RCs that screwed me over.
Thoughts
To everyone that has yet to take the test, RELAX!!!!! Somehow for me, taking the test in that environment freaked me out. I was very very nervous and couldn’t think as my normal self.
I think that if you FEAR the test, your scores will show. Go in there with an attitude that you are well prepared and ready to kill the beast.
Also, timing in verbal is KEY! I cannot stress this enough. You need to master SCs from front to back as you will need to save time for CRs and especially RCs.
I ‘m thinking of taking the test again but may need some tips on how to improve as I think I’m hitting a bottleneck right now. I don’t know what more I can do. I’m lost.
A big thank you to Gamjatang, Laxie, Duttsit, Nakib, HIMALAYA, Matt, Bhai, Christoph, vivek123, joemama, and all the rest of members that I may have missed….you guys are truly inspiring and I’ve learned a great deal from each of you!!
Side note:
It seems that some tests were already utilizing PV’s whiteboard/markers. The ‘boards’ seems like one of those overhead projector papers that you can write on with markers. It does not seem very user friendly to me. The ‘boards’ were 8x11 and I’m not sure how much can you can write on it with the fat-tip markers???????
Anyways, good luck to all of you who plan on taking the test soon!
