New evidence suggests that women may react differently than men to high blood pressure, or hypertension. Women with hypertension are less likely to suffer from ensuing complications, such as heart attacks or strokes, and are less likely to die as a result. Women's higher estrogen levels may be related to this phenomenon: after menopause, when estrogen levels lower, women gradually become more and more susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

Which of the following positions would be best supported by the statements in the passage above?

A. Very elderly women with high blood pressure are no less susceptible to complications than their male counterparts are.
B. When treating their female patients for hypertension, doctors should take into account whether or not the patient has gone through menopause.
C. Men with hypertension should receive immediate treatment, while women with high blood pressure may wait until their condition becomes severe.
D. Since women withstand high blood pressure more readily than men do, the benefits they receive from lowering it are relatively insignificant.
E. Women with very high blood pressure are as likely to suffer complications from their condition as are men with only slightly elevated blood pressure.

The answer is B. When treating their female patients for hypertension, doctors should take into account whether or not the patient has gone through menopause.

The passage states that women with hypertension are less likely to suffer from ensuing complications, such as heart attacks or strokes, and are less likely to die as a result. However, the passage also states that this phenomenon is related to women's higher estrogen levels. After menopause, when estrogen levels lower, women gradually become more and more susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

This suggests that the risk of complications from hypertension is not the same for all women. Women who are still menstruating may be at a lower risk than women who have gone through menopause. Therefore, it is important for doctors to take into account a woman's menopausal status when treating her for hypertension.

The other options are not supported by the statements in the passage. Option A is incorrect because the passage does not say anything about very elderly women. Option C is incorrect because the passage does not say anything about men. Option D is incorrect because the passage does not say anything about the benefits of lowering blood pressure. Option E is incorrect because the passage does not say anything about women with very high blood pressure.

I don’t understand why A is not relevant- while the passage doesn’t directly mention very elderly women, we can guarantee that very elderly women have gone through menopause quite a while ago. Compared to B, in which a woman might have gone through menopause very recently, and therefore it’s not as relevant to her treatment.
