The time it takes a particular student to hit their target score varies quite a bit. Ideally, a time frame of two to three months is best. Of course in reality there are students who are done with the GMAT in a month, and others who take longer than six months.

The best course of action is to get familiarity with the different GMAT question types. Pick up a copy of the current Official Guide for GMAT Review 2015, go over all the question types in both quant and verbal. Do the first 20 questions in each category, these are the easiest questions, and this a good way to grasp the structure of the test. Then plan to take a practice test with the official GMATPrep software(it is free): https://www.mba.com/global/the-gmat-exam ... tware.aspx

Based on the results you will have a better gauge of the timeline needed to hit your target. Essentially, the earlier you can get a solid baseline the better it is, because then you can predict the time frame of getting to your target score.

Cheers,
Dabral
