+1 for E.

(A) requirements of maintenance and consuming of special racing fuel by earlier high horsepower models

(B) requirements by earlier high horsepower models of consuming of special racing fuel and maintenance

(C) requirements for consuming of special racing fuel and maintenance of earlier high horsepower models

(D) consumption of special racing fuel and maintenance that was required by earlier high horsepower models

(E) maintenance and consumption of special racing fuel that were required by earlier high horsepower models --> Correct, maintains parallelism and rectifies Subject-Verb error

Hence, E.

In E, costly maintenance and consumption of special racing fuel that...
Here costly maintenance of special racing fuel seems awkward...Can we logically do maintenance of fuel?

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The correct noun to use is ‘consumption’ rather than the word ‘consuming’. Choice D has a mistake in grammar. You need to use the plural instead of ‘that was required’. Choice E is the correct answer.

Hey,
I would like to help you with this one.

Observe the structure more carefully

costly maintenance and consumption of special racing fuel

X and y of z
Of z is only applicable to Y and not X

Perfect Parallelism in E and SV Agreement is also taken care of with usage of "were" instead of "was"
