Than is there in B.
Why do we require perfect tense here?

IMO C
A & E - have subj-verb agreement error. New techniques -- have/make
B - not sure if it is out rightly wrong to have than ever before at the end of the sentence, but I would certainly prefer to have it just after in greater detail
There is one more way to look at this sentence
New techniques in thermal-scanning photography, a process that records radiation from surface areas, make it possible to study, [strike]in greater detail,[/strike] the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river than ever before. This sentence is incomplete.
D - wordy and awkward.

IMO B

You are right, but IMO if you look carefully you will observe that THAN in B is attached to THE EFFECTS: "the effects [...] than ever.." which makes no sense.

IMO the sentence would be equally correct with MAKE or MADE, but HAVE MADE is coherent providing that the research has been completed recently.

So the key is the subject and the placement of THAN.

C is clear and concise. B unnecessarily complicates by adding a few commas

New techniques in thermal-scanning photography, a process that records radiation from surface areas, makes it possible to study
the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever before.
(A) makes it possible to study the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever before
phrase "in greater detail than ever before" modifies the verb and should be placed right next to it
(B) make it possible to study, in greater detail, the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river than ever before
"in greater detail than ever before" should not be separated. Otherwise, we need another subject and a verb to make it work.
(C) have made it possible to study in greater detail than ever before the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river. Correct
(D) make possible the study of the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than it ever was before. They key here, I believe, "the study in greater detail" is inferior to "to study in greater detail. A study that is more detailed than ever before would have made D more attractive than it is now.\

(E) has made it possible than ever before to study in greater detail the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river subject-verb agreement

noboru...I think that "it" in D has no clear reference . Ideally "it" should point to study but here the conflict is between "river" and "study" .

option D
Techniques make possible the study of the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than it ever was before

IMO there are two issues.
ISSUE 1:
in greater detail seems to modify river rather than the study

ISSUE 2:
The Two items compared are not grammatically parallel. On the left side of the comparison, we have - the study of a river: NOUN + Prep MODIFIER. On the right side, we have - it ever was before : SUBJECT + VERB.

Hi all,

I do not understand why we use "make it possible" here while "it" doesn't refer to any antecedent????

Thank you.

make vs have made is the issue here...Rest are easy to eliminate

Every time I am rejected by Harvard, my friends make it possible for me to endure the rejection
My friends have made it possible for me to endure the rejections at Harvard

Here too the meaning implied is the same as that implied by B...

A is something that the friends do every time to help me
B it is the friends that help me
