A little background info. English is my first language. I'm 31, married, already in my career as a staff accountant. I am NOT pursuing an MBA, instead my goal is a master of science in accounting (MSA), then on to the CPA. For some unknown reason online MSA programs are very difficult to come by and due to various reasons (our jobs, Florida's housing market, economy, etc.), relocation is just not an option right now. Instead I'm going to attend the University of Central Florida where I received my bachelors in business administration 3 years ago. UCF only requires a 540 GMAT. I say "only" but this could be quite a challenge for me. I worked full time and attended school part time for 10 years so I took many of the basic classes (Algebra, Stats, English 1 & 2, etc.) from 1998 to 2002.
I'm planning for 3 1/2 months of studying. I start the Kaplan 3 week math refresher tonight and then will have 9 weeks of the Kaplan Advantage GMAT prep course. At that point I can take a practice GMAT at the Pearson center. Kaplan recommends waiting no more than 2 weeks after completing a prep course to take the actual GMAT.
I've read online about putting together a schedule/plan, using an error log, etc. I'm not even sure exactly what an error log is though. I've been following the GMAT question of the day posts but it is rare I get one correct. I'm hoping this is not a sign of bad things to come.
Ideally I would like to take the test one time and get at least a 540. I've been reading post after post on the forums but I'm pretty overwhelmed at this point. I'm not sure where to begin, how to put together an effective study plan, how to use an error log, how to gauge if a 540 is a feasible score, etc.
I know this is a bit of a lengthy post so I appreciate anyone who stuck with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to get this right the first time!

This is the base skeleton to build your study schedule around. You need to be aware of your time constraints your sections, when to study what, what to do with your spare time etc. The bright side is 540 is a very attainable score especially through 3 months of study time. The general framework to break down your studies would be 1 month Quant, 1 month Verbal, 1 month Test prep.
In terms of books and courses, you're already off to a great start with Kaplan, very well respected programs and books. I'm currently into my first Kaplan book and I am certainly considering a few of their other options, you'll also find that the MGMAT guides and OG12 are a must. Both of these work hand in hand together and provide a real strong foundation that would surely get you to 540 as long as you dedicate the proper time into it.
What i'll also mention is there are all kinds of free tests that you can get through this site and tests that come along with the books. You don't necessarily have to go to the Pearson Center. MGMAT guides alone come with 6 practice tests that are great indicators for where your score is leading up to the test.
I wish you all the best, I don't consider myself a guru in the field of the GMAT just yet but I am writing my GMAT in December myself so we'll be along the same path for the most part. I agree, Kaplan Premier is a great book to get in 600 GMAT range, but not as great for 700+. You can also get Kaplan Maths foundations if you think Premier is a bit advanced. Princeton Review also may work if you are targeting 600 range.
