Noah’s contracting company builds road at a rate of 1 mile per week, except during the rainy season, when that rate drops to \(\frac{1}{2}\) mile per week. If Noah is hired to build 11 miles of road, and his company begins construction 5 weeks before the start of the rainy season, how many weeks will it take Noah’s company to complete the contract? (Rainy season lasts 14 weeks.)

Answer is E - 17.
Rate during rainy season - 1/2 mile of road
Normal rate (Except rainy season) - 1 mile of road
Total number of miles of road to be laid - 11 miles
No of weeks with no rain - 5
So miles of road laid in those 5 weeks - 5*1 (Rate * Weeks) = 5 Miles
Miles left - 6 miles of road left
No of weeks to build the remaining - 6/1/2 = 12 weeks
Therefore, total no of weeks = 5 + 12 = 17 (E).

total target 11 miles
so in 5 weeks , 5miles would be constructed
left with 6 miles
which would take 12 weeks of rainy season so total weeks taken 12+5= 17 IMO E
