One thing I’m realising during GMAT prep is how much non-academic factors affect performance.
1) Energy and health
For a long time, I constantly felt mentally tired while studying and thought I just lacked discipline. Later, I found out I was low on B12 and Vitamin D. After taking better care of that, my focus and study stamina improved noticeably.
I genuinely think taking care of nutrients and overall health helps much more than people realise during prep.
2) Taking breaks actually improved my performance
Initially, I thought studying for long uninterrupted hours was the serious way to prep. But over time, I noticed my accuracy and retention got worse when I pushed myself continuously. Once I started taking proper breaks between sessions, I performed much better and my focus increased.
3) Meditation helped me with my focus in verbal
One thing that helped me a lot with Reading Comprehension was improving my attention span. Earlier, I would zone out while reading passages and end up rereading lines multiple times. I started doing a very small breathing exercise, literally just sitting quietly for 2 minutes and focusing on my breath before studying. It sounds simple, but it genuinely helped me stay more mentally present while reading verbal passages.
4) Consistency matters more than motivation
I’m slowly realising that some of my better study days are not the days I feel extremely motivated , they’re just the days I sit down and do the work anyway. One small thing that helped me on days when I didn’t feel like studying was telling a friend or family member exactly what I planned to complete that day. Knowing someone might check in later pushed me to finish the task instead of procrastinating.
These things sound small, but they’ve genuinely made my prep more efficient and manageable so far.
