Hi Everyone! (first post here @ gmatclub)
I am looking for some advice.
I am in the final few months of my BS Mechanical Engineering at NYU Tandon. As you may have already gathered I did not start my undergrad until well after graduating high school. Following high school I went into a technology program and received a certificate in automotive service. I worked in the industry as a technician, shop foreman and eventually a quality control manager with the same organization (auto-manufacturer XYZ) for a period of about 9 years; The last 4, school full-time, work full-time.
Following my original intention for going back to school I have abandoned the automotive industry and recently acquired a position as a biomedical project engineer at a top 20 Medical School in an R&D lab. My goal is to rapidly gain Biotech traction and have a seriously disruptive impact on making state-of-the-art medical devices affordable to the masses.
My particular conundrum is that I CANNOT be a project engineer. I have been in a professional leadership position for the last 5 years and although it maybe considered not a very prestigious one, I am used to having copious amounts of responsibility and being the 'go-to' guy/girl in a department of about 30 employees. I do not want an MBA, I NEED one to prevent myself from being pigeonholed into a career as a back-office engineer.
Where the advice is needed: I have heard of many individuals going through undergrad, working for 'X' amount of years and then pursuing an MBA and that doesn't scare me. What does scare me is the fact that I am just finishing my undergrad, now. How can I leverage my non-prestigious work experience with my newly acquired engineering degree for a TOP 10 MBA?
