Can anybody explain the difference between the correlative conjunctions Not only/ but also and not only/ but?
I see that "not only / but" type is commonly used on articles from magazines such as " the economist", BWk, etc. Check this extract from the economist :

AFAIK not only..... but also..... is pretty much the standard choice in GMAT. Have you found a question that has not only.... but.... as the correct answer? Would be interested to see it if you have.

Have looked this up in Chicago manual of style, can't find an explicit rule, but these are the examples it uses:
They were armed not only with petitions but also with evidence.
The judge dismissed not only the parking ticket cases but several others as well.
this site says drop the also to put more empahsis on the first term:
