I have only seen not only/but also being used in this way "The shop sells not only sandwiches but also ice cream." in that the matching parts of speech are directly have the parallelism markers (Not only X [sandwiches] but also Y [ice cream].
I have a few clarifying questions on not only/but also parallelism: -Are there cases of using "not only" with something else besides "but also"? Would "Not only is she mean, but she is abrasive" be totally incorrect? -I am confused when other words such as "it" come between not only/but also. For example, would it be incorrect to say, "Not only is the home too expensive for us to buy, but it is also in the wrong location." Or would you need to say, "but also it is in the wrong location"? Are there any correct examples in which "it" or other things can come between not only/but also besides the X and Y markers?
That was a doozy... thank you for bearing with me I look forward to learning an expert's view.
