Notebooks at a certain office supply company are sold for either $7 for a pack of 10 or $27 for a pack of 50. How many total packs of notebooks were sold by the company yesterday?
- The company sold \($218\) worth of notebooks yesterday.
- The company sold a total of \(380\) notebooks yesterday.

Let's assume that the number of packs of 10 sold = \(x\)
Let's assume that the number of packs of 50 sold = \(y\)
Note: x and y are nonnegative integers representing the number of packs sold.
Question: x + y ?
Statement 1
The company sold \($218\) worth of notebooks yesterday.
7x + 27 y = 218
Upon solving this equation, the only values that satisfy (x,y) is (8,6). Hence this statement is sufficient to find a unique value of x + y. We can eliminate A and D
Statement 2
The company sold a total of \(380\) notebooks yesterday.
10x + 50 y = 380
x + 5y = 38
Assume
x = 3 → y = 7 ; x + y = 10
x = 8 → y = 6 ; x + y = 14
This statement leads to multiple possible values of x + y, hence the statement alone is not sufficient.

Any quicker way to check if multiple pairs of (x, y) are possible for equation 1?
Seems like a pretty laborious task to check for multiple values of (x or y) and see if the equation holds.
