Hi Nina1987,

The OGs are great books for practice questions, but they're not really designed to teach you Tactics, pattern-matching or any of the little "secrets" about the GMAT.

With a Q49, you clearly have the knowledge and ability to hit a Q51, but if 'your way' of doing things is keeping you from that goal, then you have to get comfortable with the idea that you have to adjust your approach (and practice more Tactics-based methods). Thankfully, there are resources that can help you to hone those skills, but you're going to have to invest the necessary time, money and energy into that process.

1) When are you planning to take the GMAT?

Wow! Thank you dabral for such mind blowing insights. This will definitely make it a lot easier to pick numbers and many a times obviate it. Thank you again

Typically in these cases you have to use the given constraints in the problem, whether in the main stem or in the statements to generate examples. These are context specific and can be difficult because you have to keep track of a lot of things as you establish insufficiency. I will illustrate those as well if you are interested.

Cheers,
Dabral

dabral: Yes it will be nice if you elaborate on this too. Thanks much!

5) Here is another example of an official GMAT data sufficiency question that uses a similar set up:

If a and b are positive, is \((a^{-1}+b^{-1})^{-1}\) less than \((a^{-1}b^{-1})^{-1}\)?

1) \(a=2b\)

2) \(a+b>1\)

Cheers,
Dabral

ANSWER B. The stem simplifies to ab(1-b-a)<0. since ab is always +ve then the question just asks whether a+b>1?
