I have read on this forum that some people will number 1-41 on the GMAT Verbal section on the notepad and cross out wrong answers and fill in the correct answer.
An example of what I'm talking about is here

mid way through that guy's debrief post, he has a number 1-41
Anyways my questions are,
How common is this strategy and do a lot of people use it?
What book or guide is this from?
Is there a formal way or set of instructions that teaches you how to do this? I tried it myself but I just want to make sure i'm doing it in the most efficient way possible.
Is this worth doing during the test? I assume it would waste a couple minutes or so.
Let me know your thoughts. I tried it out yesterday and I ended up liking the strategy, but I dd not finish 3 verbal questions towards the end of my practice test.

Difficult to give a exact answer, it depends on your familiarity. I do it in verbal and DS because of POE(Process of elimination).
You may try it during mocks if you find it useful then good to go.

I have seen this in a few places (Kaplan uses a grid), MGMAT has a reference to it too.
It helps after 3 hours to keep track of correct/incorrect answers so that you don't have to doubt yourself whether you have eliminated C or not.... it is helpful to keep track of elimination but I have used it only for 5 or so questions where I had no idea what the correct answer was.
